Thinking about moving to St. Croix next winter
Hi all! Glad I found this Forum!
I'm thinking of going island next year. I'm a Critical Care Nurse and will begin searching for a job in St. Croix for next season with the plan to make a permanent move. Is a nursing salary on St. Croix sufficient to live comfortably or will I need to have more than one job? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
The answer is Yes.
I don't know what the situation is right now with contract nursing on St Croix but if you can land a contract position through an outside agency it's a great opportunity to get a 3-6 month taste of island life and work to see if it would really suit you long term. I've known many nurses who've come to St Thomas on contract jobs - the pay is very good and they offer a generous housing allowance. Good luck!
Thanks for the response but the answer to "yes" begs for a precise question : )

I believe he was answering your question about whether you could live comfortably on a nursing salary.
Yes, you can live comfortably on a nurses salary.
you should have no problem, but as oldtart suggested, a travel nurse position would be best to start
How easy is it to find roommates to share a rental house or condo?

Welcome! Glad you found us and wish you all the best!
The hospital on St. Croix is currently going through some difficult times. Suggest you log onto their website and check for availabilities. We need nurses and it sounds like you would be well qualified. Continue your search on this site as well as local news sites:

These may be helpful in your decision process.
Best of luck!
After further research, I guess my next question should be do you think the hospital will close???
No, it wil not close.
no
Pdmargie: Neither of the territorial hospitals can close because they are the sole providers of care. However, if you want more stability, maybe you can consider coming over to St. Thomas and https://www.srmedicalcenter.org/. We would love to have you!!
Well,.....the Settlers Guide to the USVI I ordered has shipped and my online contact with a travel nurse company has resulted in multiple emails and phone calls from recruiters. They want me to start in STT as soon as possible. I wish I could jump on a plane right now, but that's unlikely until I research some more and make a plan to wrap things up on the Mainland. Patience young Padawan : )
Ask and ye shall receive here at vinow...;-)
Have you been here before? Have you done a PMV? Have you done any other research about the VI? Do not come here without a contract or you may find yourself in the same situation as JD on STT. Employers here will mess with you. Read the thread under Employment Attorney.
It's not paradise.

Thanks for the advice! I've vacationed on St John, St. Thomas and St. Croix on separate occasions. I found St. John to be the most beautiful but St. Croix seems the most livable. I have 2 acquaintances on St. Croix that I can call on for help when the time is right. I'm doing as much research as I can now, will travel to St. Croix before I make any final decision and will, for sure, have some sort of legal employment contract before I make any move. I'm not looking for "paradise" I'm looking for a nice place to live where I can work hard at something I enjoy and be able to do things I like to do,...like SCUBA diving, snorkeling, sailing and astronomy,....to name a few.
PS: I've vacationed in the BVI as well. The "Baths",....rock! ; )
WOW! You vacationed here and you're doing research on this message board. What about what's not found here? You've got it all figured out then. Good luck with that!
loucypher, really? sounds like she is doing her homework

Thank goodness there's a cross section of diverse opinions posted here and that the repetitive negatives and sarcastic put-downs from your ilk aren't the major voice when people come here seeking advice. It's clear that you truly dislike everything about living here - is there some reason you can't dig yourself out of this purgatory and find somewhere to live which would suit you better? It seems such a shame that anyone should be forced to live somewhere which simply doesn't work for them.

Actually,.....I'm a he.

Sorry. The "margie" threw me a curve. No offense.

Hey, I'm a highly trained and experienced Trauma/Neuro Intensive Care Nurse. I can work just about anywhere. "If it doesn't work out they'll never be any doubt that the pleasure was worth all the pain"
Here's a question that might spark a lively debate,......I have a 1967 Ford F100 pick up with only 28,000 original miles, all original, no rust, runs like new. 2wd with 8 foot bed and "3 on the tree" transmission. Been thinking of selling it but thought it might make a good island truck. I got a quote of $2500.00 to ship it to St. Croix from Pennsylvania. Any thoughts???
