Things not in a book........
Hi All-
I have a few questions - and want to know about a certain place there---
OK - I am going to get this handbook soon I believe, but there are some things that wont be in the book;
1 - The water. I read about the "wells" I think they are, and wondering..do they taste like regular tap water, rusty at times, extra salty, extra floride.....I have city well water now, and it gets shut off about 1-2 times a month. When it comes back on, its cloudy, dirty, and gross. Is this something I should expect?
2 - Infestation. Are there alot of bugs that are creepy and crawly on the floor all the time? Or does it really depend on how you clean, open doors/windows?
Same idea, are the misquito's a problem there?
Strange things in your boots, like scopians...or whatever?
3 - AND THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE -
Can you tell me ANYTHING you know about the place called..
"Amalia Cafe" - or Pita Express?
Anything you can tell me about this pace would be sooo helpful!
another - and I know its alot of questions here.....
I saw on the site the Avg of what a basic bill of water, cable, etc etc would be, are these pretty accurate to what you all there pay? Or is it realy wrong?
I ask this last one so I may know what the cost of living would be when neog. a salary...which may be very soon..... hopefully 😛
Thank you all so much! All you can tell me would be helpful!
Gia
I just read the thread about insects, so ignore that one......
I also looked up all I could on houses,,,,,, there are some real beautiful places there!
CANT WAIT 😛
Gia: I wonder if you are talking about cisterns, which are like your own private water supply under your house. The quality of water in them greatly depend on the care and cleanliness of the cistern and the roof as well as the quality of the water that goes into it. City water is desalinated ocean, the rest is rain water run-off from the roof. If you are in a private house, you might want to find out who is in charge of the water supply. Public places (condos and restaurants) have to test their water frequently. Many hotels have their own desal plants. In general, my biggest complaint is over-chlorination.
Gia -I am in an apt in the lower level of a private house on the northside in West Caret Bay. We have cistern water & it tastes great. This area of St Thomas gets plenty of rain usually so the cistern stays filled. If it were to go dry a truck will deliver water to refill the cistern, I think the cost is around $300.00 for 5,000 gallons.
I go to one little shopping area that has a sign in the Laundromat restroom warning that the water in that entire shopping place has unsafe levels of certain bacteria which make it unsafe for drinking...kinda makes you wonder if its worth it to wash your hands there in the restroom...
Hello Gia,
Water - I know just a few people with actual wells, this is not the source of water for homes. Cisterns like East Ender said are the main source of water. Cisterns in most cases are cement holding tanks of rain water so if your cistern is clean the water should be as pure as it comes. I have cleaned out a cistern before and from years and years of rain water and buying water sediment does build up and form a silt at the bottom of the cistern however the pipe that brings the water from the cistern does not go all the way to the bottom so does not pull from the sediment so I have never experienced cloudy water, also the pump/pipes should have filters. When buying water is necessary the process of adding the water to cistern stirs up some of the sediment and for maybe one day the water appears cloudy but then it settles again. I have never had trouble with cistern water. If you have to buy water to fill your cistern you might find this water taste clorinated in which case you can buy bottled water to drink.
City water in the VI is not what most residents use. In St. Thomas city water is only available in town area for the small part. And no I would not drink that.
So no you won't experience salty, extra floride city water at your house or apartment because that isn't what we use and unless you add something to your cistern or your landlord does then you should have clean, clear natural water.
Infestation- you read the thread on bugs. But to answer the other questions. Cleaniness to some degree affects the bugs. However ants seem to come anyway no matter how much you scrub. Roaches are a pain in the butt if you have an apartment with an existing problem but you can get poisons and try to control them. If you leave your shoes outside little lizards or bugs might crawl in sure, or a stray dog might "steal" them as a chew toy. Other bugs are attracted to light at night so if you leave doors open they might fly in to your lights.
The folks who own Amalie Cafe and Pita Express are very nice people.
The cost of living info is acurate as of last year, its going to be updated but is still a close representation.
All the best with your moving plans.
