things I love about the islands
One of the things I love about the island.
I have more friends in AZ, lived here 64 years, but never has anyone offered to take or pick me up from the airport. Here on the island, I already have had two friends offer to pick me up at 10:00 PM when I get in. Last time I left, I had three friends willing to pick me up at 5:00 AM to take me to the airport. People seem to be closer on-island;)
Feel free to add to the list....
True dat! But it's often a good/bad thing. Since most of us are transplants our friends become our family and you really need a good island family to help keep you sane and to rely on when you need help and vice versa. But your island family will constantly change as people come and go. Also the price to go home to see your real family definitely hurts the pocket book. It's more a difference to me then a blessing.
I love the courteous drivers on STX. They will stop, in both directions, to let you turn right or cross the road.
I love the exchange of courteous greetings and small talk before launching into the business at hand. It's a reminder that people come first, business second.
I also love how sometimes when people seem pretty vexed at you for causing a problem they are sometimes the first to help. I've gotten this when trying to maneuver really difficult driving situations. I've had people who I'm blocking take the wheel for me!
Best,
