THE VIWMA ADVISES THE COMMUNITY OF AN ACTIVE FIRE AT THE ANGUILLA LANDFILL
(ST. CROIX, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) advises the community that the Anguilla landfill is experiencing an active fire. The Virgin Islands Fire Service and VIWMA contractors are currently working to suppress the fire.
The VIWMA would like to advise the public and all solid waste and wastewater haulers that the St. Croix Transfer Station and Anguilla Landfill are closed for the receipt of waste effective Wednesday, March 7, 2018. The public and haulers will be notified when the Authority will resume receiving waste.
The Authority will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health and the environment. Motorists are also advised to avoid traveling along the Airport Road until further notice.
People were talking about this early this morning. Typical for it to be disseminated to the public so much after the fact.
Fires at landfill sites are very common.
It's out according to VIWMA press release
