The Best Classifieds??
Hello everyone- Thanks for all of your help so far. I have been wanting to look at classifieds. I know I won't get a job (likely) or a place to rent until after I arrive for good, but I am wanting to look at some classifieds just to get a feel for what is out there. I know Craigslist but I assume that is only somewhat reliable. I checked the VI Consortium but there isn't really anything posted in the classified section. Do the Virgin Islands have another paper with a classified section I can check out as part of my research? - Shannon
The Virgin Islands Daily News, the Island Trader. There are a couple of online employment sites which have been posted here several times but I don't have them at the tip of my fingers. It goes without saying that you should never take a rental sight unseen. Craigslist is an excellent source but best bet is to first move into somewhere temporary for a week or so until you get your bearings, know where you'll be working and have a vehicle.
Thanks OT. It is definitely my plan to rent something short term while I look for a place. Would not rent something unseen. The classifieds help me to get a feel for what is out there, what average prices are etc. I have never moved to an island but I have moved across the country multiple times. Some things are different for sure. A lot is different! But some principles are the same. Classifieds have always helped me in my research. Thanks for the ideas!
these are a few online job search sites
Jobs are much less likely to be found in the print classified ads - apartments are very commonly advertised, cars from private owners and things for sale are pretty good in the Island Trader - house sales are more often posted on signage by the road - many apartments are also posted that way only too.
Many jobs are never advertised and filled by word of mouth or industry networking - even some that are advertised are done so only to fulfill some Labor or legal requirements but the person filling the position has already been decided and it gives the appearance of an open search.
Cars and apartments on Craigslist seem to be rife with scams, bad ads and must be considered very carefully.
Thank you Avatar- I will not rent anything unseen, nor buy a car unseen and don't imagine I will get a job until after I get there. I have never rented unseen even in my moves across the states. I just want to look to get a feel for prices, what is out there, etc.
If you want to get a feel for prices, look at The Island Trader: http://virginislandsdailynews.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/viewer.aspx. You may also want to be reading the Virgin Islands Daily News and The Source on line for local news and information.
Thank you all for the ideas 😉
