hey everyone, just wanted to thank all of you for all of the feedback on all of our questions so far. the thread got so long i decided to start a new one! Hopefully i will be part of the new home depot team going down there in december. If you all have any negative ideas about home depot let me tell you this, the only person who gets "screwed", so to speak, by home depot is the guy whos been charging you almost double for what you can get it at lower prices there. Im not a h.depot company man either, ive just seen what happened when they came here and all the business owners who were charging outrageous prices had to bring there prices way down to match us. ive been in alaska for 12 years and they really have done incredibly well since opening a year and a half ago. There is alot of nice stuff there for cheap prices to make your house or apt. a little more homey.....any way, im not a spokes person for them so i'll shut up about that now!! Im just using them to get where you all are!! ha ha!! Say, anyway, I had a point to this new thread. 2 new querys, #1, I want to bring my little dog down there, is it really that hard to find a place that will let you have a small dog?would a little house for rent let you have one? #2 how much is it to ship your car across from florida? we were thinkg of driving from alaska to florida (crazy, i know..) we want to keep one car that we have right now at least. also, while we are at it, whats your guys stories? how did you all get to be down there, if you feel like sharing with all of us land locked types!! thanks again tony and sue

1. Doggies--I have a not-so-small dog and it took several phone calls before we found an apartment that was affordable, decent, and dog-friendly. It will require diligence, but it can be done.

2. Car Shipping and Cross Country Driving--We didn't ship out car, only our personal effects. I, however, highly recommend shipping your car if it is a decent used American car. Used cars are over-priced and over worked on-island. I am also a great advocate for the cross country drive! The whole family drove from SF, California to Florida for our move and we had a blast. Especially considering that moving to the USVI requires an adventurous spirit, I thought it was a perfect adventure pre-adventure. Also, things are much cheaper to ship from Florida and if you are shipping animals in cargo, it requires less flight time.

Hello,

Onik'a has become our moving dog and pets expert. LOL.... not sure she wanted the position but over the months its become hers. In any case she is right about the apartments with pets... a few places allow you to have them - you just have to call and look around more then you would have had to without the pets. But just have a little patience and you will find something.

Being from St. Thomas (thats my story 🙂 I never got used to long drives - because there is no where on the island that takes more then an hour to get to unless your purpose is to drive every road then it will take longer... so alaska to florida sounds crazy to me... LOL LOL. But if you are up for it great. Definately cheaper to ship from Florida. I can't even imagine that drive 🙂 Good Luck.

And Onika already suggested where to find several stories about folks who moved here... in the moving guide on this site (top of this page select Moving guide) and choose what to expect.

All the best with your moving plans 🙂
