Thanks
Thanks for everyone's advice. We were in St Croix last week and bought a place.
Can't move down full time for a couple of years, but in spirit we are there!
Peter & Britt
Where is the place you bought? We will be there in 3 weeks and will be looking for a 1-2 bedroom apartment on a 1 year lease. E-mail me if you are interested.
Peter - any suggestions for others... where did you eat, go to the beach, how did you find your home to purchase - any suggestions there... lots of folks are interested in the same - and your experience might help others. Thanks for anything that you add. Glad you found this site helpful. 🙂

We relied on a number of sources to give us a flavor of what life whould be like in the USVI and in particular STX. Our research was simplier than many peoples, because we aren't going to be looking for jobs when we make the move. No do we have school age children so we didn't have to consider schools.
Good Starting Points:
1. Settlers Handbook
2. Subscription US Virgin Island News
On line we regularly read:
1. Virgin Island Daily News
2. St Croix Source
3. Virgin Island Now. (Great place to get questions answered. )
On line we researched the following sources.
1. VI Telephone directory. Nothing like reading the yellow pages to find out what is available in any location. Some businesses have URLs listed in the on line yellow pages that you can link to for additional information
2. Visit real estate web sites so you can see what is for sale. All the MLS are the same, however, some realtors have a front ends that may work better for your needs. Try them all sites until you find one you like. The site at www.st-croix-real-estate.com has a lot of useful information on their web page and interesting links.
3. If you have the time use google and type St Croix, St Thomas, Virgin Isalnds into the search window and see what comes up.
Finally talk to people.
1. Long distance calls to real estate agents, lawyers, property managers, etc. aren't any more expensive than other LD call stateside. Some real estate companies even have 800 numbers.
2. Visit the islands and talk to people. Tell people what you are thinking of doing and solicit their advice. We found most people in the VI are very friendly and willing to talk. I guess this comes from living in a less stressful environment.
3. Talk to friends. They probably know, or know of someone who made the move to the USVI. Ask for a phone number and make contact with a person who has made the move.
i couldn"t reiterate your comments more if you show a distinct inerest in the island locals are a wealth of info. also attend local ev ents mango melle, christmas festival and you will meet even more people interested in talking to you about their island.. the publications re inernet or by subscription that you mentioned are perfect all of the above is what made us decide this is the ideal retirement place for us!!! good luck

Hi Peter,
We also are considering buying land in St. Croix (just for investment only). What are the areas to consider that would have the best appreciation value. Also, are there many lots under $80,000?
Look forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks a lot!
