I am thinking of going to either of the Universities in the USVI next fall. I am having difficulty deciding between the two, though. I am attracted to the ruralness of St. Croix, and am not very interested in a busy nightlife that seems to be apparent at St. Thomas. I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota right now, but grew up in rural area and prefer that life style. I am studing Environmental Science and would like to study island ecology and and the special challenges facing an island in regards to resources and envrionment. I tried to get a good feel for the universities from their websites, but that is always hit or miss, and I can't exactly go visit them first, so I would appreciate some feedback and opinions on which island would be best suited for me. Also with all of the recent storm activity, I am a little concerned about being there during hurricane season, how much are the islands effected? Do you usually get missed? I would appreciate anything you have to offer.

It is rare for any particular island to get hit by a hurricane. The USVI are far enough south and east that most of the storm systems don't get formed up enough to do serious damage until after they're long past us. You would be in far more danger of experiencing a hurricane if you went to school in Florida or any of the gulf coast states, as most of the hurricanes end up in those areas once they are full force.

If you like rural regions, St. Croix would probably be an easy adjustment for you to make. It's a shame you can't visit prior to making your school selection... but chances are you'll have a good time on whichever island you ultimately select. Best wishes with your degree!

I live on STT and am not big into the nightlife scene either...which I think is good, because in my opinion, St. Thomas doesn't have that big of a nightlife scene to begin with. You really have to go looking for it to expereience it, it's not in your face like Can Cun for example.

I would think STT would be the best pick because you would be a short ferry ride from St. John, which I think would be an interesting study for what you are intersted in. There are also parts of STT, like the West End or some places on the Northside that offer that "country, rural" feel. In all honesty, I've never been to St. Croix, so I can't comment on what it would be like there, but for me, I'm very happy on STT. I love looking out my windows and seeing down island views of the BVI and such. To me, it seems that rock fever would hit harder on STX, as it seems more isolated.

Hello LH,

Perhaps a better factor to consider is whether the field you want to study or related fields are available at both campuses. It is my understanding that the St. Thomas campus has degree options in marine biology and related fields and that the St. Croix campus does not, but does have a much greater program in agriculture.

If you aren't interested in nightlife you don't have to go out to bars/clubs and seek it. That is up to you.

So I'd say research the programs offered at each campus to see what suits your studies best.

Good Luck.
