Teaching/Living in USVI

I am looking into teaching in the USVI. My biggest concern is accommodation and transportation. If there are any teachers who read this, can you let me know ...

1. Is it difficult to find housing near the schools?
2. Do you feel your salary is sufficient to cover all of your needs?
3. Will I necessarily need to purchase a vehicle?

Thanks!

Hello Jen,

Others (non teachers) can answer questions 1 and 3 for you. What island are you going to? Do you know which school? If not is it private or public and is it elementary, Junior or High School; we can somewhat narrow it down and know the area the school and better answer your questions.

Islander,

Thanks for the reply. At this time, though, I am only considering my options. Although I have received requests for my application (public schools, not private), I have not yet applied (don't see the point if it turns out I feel the salary isn't sufficient). Therefore, I have no information to give you. Everything I'm reading, though, says the cost of living in the USVI is quite high. Yet the salary range I'm looking at is only $27,000 to 36,000. That seems low when you consider a higher cost of living. So I'm just trying to get a feel from others.

Thanks!

Hi, My husband also has received an invitation to submit his resume for a teaching job in the islands. Have you been able to get any info as to housing, pets etc? I am also trying to get as much as I can before submitting the paperwork.

You have the right information. A starting teacher on the islands will earn "in the neighborhood" of $30,000+ a year. I can't imagine living on St Thomas or St Croix without my own car. If your teaching salary is your only source of income, it will be possible... but not comfortable to live here. This is "nothing" like teaching in a typical suburban stateside situation.

If you are adventurous, strong and willing to be very flexible, then this might work for you. If however you are looking for a great early teaching experience while living on a beautiful island, you will have a tough time.

This web site has more helpful information about moving to the USVI than anything else on the web. So keep asking questions and "getting answers".

Best of luck...

Hello,

Visit the Dept. of Education Human Resources web site at http://www.teachislands.vi/. It lists the certification, jobs, application process and has contact information.

If you want the private schools then scroll up to the very top of this page and click on Home and then from Home choose Education/Schools from and navigation. There are lists of schools on each island with contact information in that section.
