My wife and I are public school teachers in Florida. I am a visual arts teacher. My wife is a media specialist. We will be back to St Thomas, St Croix, St John for the second time this summer. The second time in the last five years. Yea- we are thinking this time maybe we should look at it as more than a vacation. I have so many questions. But I guess I could start off with this: Is there a need ? I see postings on private vs. public etc.. This is what and who we are - I teach art, she runs a library. If you have any understanding of those positions at all, you know they both require people who are dedicated or no one will take you seriously. We are good at what we do and have the respect of parents, students, and administration. Can you tell me if there is a need- before the application process, paper pushing, and phone calls, etc... I want to return this summer to enjoy myself, but to think about a move as well. I read these postings - go to many web sites- read books, magazines. None of this would help at all if we couldn't make a living.

I am also an artist (www.hometown.aol.com/carhoodguy) . Are there many galleries or museums that show more contemporary artwork?

If your wife has a library degree, there are usually librarian positions available. I don't know about art teachers... You might contact Claire at Gallery St Thomas 340-774-9440- she seems to have her finger on the pulse of the art world. Good luck!

Just yesterday I spoke with a woman on St Croix who had an art related business in Christiansted. She was a former art teacher who was now using her art in a business venture. Her husband is a teacher at a local private school, along with her children. After just two years here, the family was moving on to teach in the "middle east"...I guess they need more adventure... She was closing her business and they were packing up.

Yes you can become a teacher here. There are opportunities. But learn a lot and expect surprises.

Interesting side note...St Croix is rather quiet and has limited tourism. St Thomas has a much more vibrant economy. As I type this my TV say's that St Thomas has too many cruise ships today and over 16,000 cruise passengers. WHAT A MESS TRAFFIC MUST BE....

For livibility st Croix is best...for jobs and economy look to St Thomas.

I am a teacher in Pensacola Florida planning to move to St Croix in June with my husband. We are in our 50s and plan to work in St Croix for at least 5 years as a teacher and engineer. Our son is an artist in New York. Let's compare notes and ideas. We may be able to lend each other some mutual support.

Hello Jay,

Yes teaching and school staff postions are available; there is a high turn over in that area so you should look into this field. If you go to the school listings on this site there are link and contact info. for private schools and also a link to the dept. of education for applying at public schools.

For art work, take a look at some of the galleries and get an idea of what they have
