I am interested in teaching positions in the U. S. Virgin Islands and surrounding areas. Would you please direct me to web sites that describe the education system and how I would locate private and public schools for employment? Thank You Lee Ann

Hello Lee Ann,

Go to

http://www.vinow.com/move/employment/ there you will find employment general information, you will also find in the first paragraphs a link to a wage/occupation chart that will give you ideas of wages earned in the VI

Then go to
http://www.teachislands.vi that is the government site for education and it includes a chart with wages for teachers based on experience/years and also job openings

Then go to the private school web sites to see if they have any openings:

http://www.vimontessori.org/ Montessori (Montessori had openings for grades 7 and 8 I believe - it was posted a couple weeks ago)

Antilles School http://www.antilles.k12.vi.us/

There are a couple other private schools - don't have web sites, you can look them up in the yellow pages http://www.viphonebook.com and call them and inquire about jobs... the public schools you have to go through the education department - the web site I gave above is for them.

If you were to suggest an island to apply for teaching positions, would you be more likely to suggest St. Thomas or St. Croix?
I have filled out the applications, but I am not sure if I should send it to St. Thomas or St. Croix...What do you think?
Thanks!
Brooke

Can't you send it to both, 2 sets.... and then do some more research on both islands and see which one you like better in terms of having to live there. Then you will have options - if you get positions at both, let the ones on the island you didn't choose that you have opted to move to the other island, and thank you...

Have you looked into what the islands offer - they are different, St. Thomas and St. Croix... ones busier, one has more cruise visitors, one has nicer beaches in my opionion, one has better hiking and scenic drives and areas that are different.... what are you looking for perhaps that can help folks here advise on which island would better suit what you are looking for in your island home.

I agree with Islander...why not apply to both?

I used to be a teacher at Antilles (1996-1999), and LOVED IT. I have since left island to go back to school, but my years at Antilles were happy ones, and I really miss the place, the students, the faculty (honestly, there wasn't a single person with whom I couldn't get along), and even the parents....they really go out of their way to help out with what's going on at school.

Since I have never taught in a public school, I couldn't begin to tell you how the salary compares, but Antilles was competitive with other private schools in the States (I also taught in Boca Raton, FL, and made only slightly higher there, albeit I had more experience by then).

Good luck!
