Teaching jobs in St. Thomas

I'm not too sure where to direct you, however I DO know that teachers are very much needed here....oops! I meant 'there!" I knew a lady that was a Guidance Counselor at a high school in TX, then moved to STT. Immediately got a job at Cancryn, worked there for 3 days and just walked out...in the middle of class! VERY different there apparently. Couldn't get the suplies she needed, the kids were very unruly towards her, no suppport from other teachers or the staff...she was crushed. However, the private schools are great, I hear. But, the public schools meed major help. Due diligence is critical, however.

That's a sad story about the teacher's experience at Cancryn. It's true, though, that in the public schools teachers (and esp. new teachers) are often left to fend for themselves. Here at CAHS they have tried to implement a mentor program but it is hard when we are so understaffed. It does take a certain type of person to work here, you have to be a take-charge person and be prepared to 'swim for your life'. Believe me, it gets a lot easier after the first year when you learn who to ask for help and who to avoid like the plague. You end up becoming very resourceful. As far as discipline goes, I feel that an excellent sense of humor can remedy most behavior problems. I always get the most 'challenging' students on my side then use them to control the rest of the class.

Suzanne: I think it is very easy for residents to flog a system with which they really have only a passing acquaintance. I am with you on trying to recruit good people for needed work in these Virgin Isles!

My daughter in 7th grade currently attends All Saints, she only started this year after attending Sibilly Elementary for 2 years (public school). It was a difficult choice as I am a public school advocate, but I didn't feel that Cancryn would be a good spot for her. She is rather shy and quiet and only has one close girlfriend so we made the decision to keep her with her friend. (You know how the middle school years suck regardless of the institution) . She is really happy at All Saints and it's not too 'churchy' which I like. (We do not practice a religion and religion is not taught as a graded class like it is at Sts. Peter and Paul, but students do need to attend Mass every Wednesday). I know that there is a high teacher-turnover rate (lots of new, young, low-paid teachers) and that people have had issues with the principal in the past. Ms. Brady has been working at the school for over 40 years (correct me if I'm wrong, board). I'm sure you could get a job there pretty easily. I am live in NYC and I am currently a student working toward my degree in Adolescent Education and English. I want to teach on St. Thomas when i graduate. My main concern is housing and finding a school for my two daughters. Does the VI Dept of Education help potential teachers find housing? Also when should i apply, my senior year? I will be getting my Masters degree a year after i graduate with my BA. My school has a dual degree program. Thank you for you help.
