Teaching in St. John

Good afternoon,

I've read a few messages concerning the area of education. I will be moving to St. John in July. I am currently teaching and living in Maine. I would love to find a teaching job either in St. Thomas or St. John. I've noticed there are many opportunities for foreign language teachers as well as Special Education teachers. How available are jobs in regular ed. classrooms, primarily K-5? Also, would it be possible to find a job in the education field when I arrived in July if I have all my paper work together? Do schools interview and hire over the phone, or should I make plans to visit the islands? So many questions... please help if you can! Thank you so much, have a wonderful day!

I would start off looking in STT... More teaching positions available as well as housing/apts. From my experience most schools prefer to interview in person as opposed to over the phone.

Hello Brittany,

Jobs for teachers in regular classrooms/subjects definitely open up. Keep looking. I have heard of the Education Dept. doing initial interviews by phone - so it is done to some degree. Being on island will help with the reception you get since human resource people hear from prospective residents all the time. Being on island gives more legitimacy to your application (or more so to your plan to move to the VI).
