Hello everyone,
I'm moving in December to student teach in St. Thomas and I was just wondering what the dress code is for teachers. I'm working on buying my professional wardrobe to use for student teaching and I want to make sure I'm buying the right things. Thanks for any help!

If no teacher checks in, you might contact the Dept. of Education through their website and ask:

It depends on the school. Where are you going to teach?

Public Schools: mostly business casual, no shorts, no jeans, no flip flops, nothing too short or too low

Antilles and VI Montessori: *slightly* more casual, but pretty much the same

All Saints: slightly more formal than public, but women can not wear pants (skirts and dresses)

brighter colors over black colored-clothing encouraged (not required) in the VI

I would ask your school administrator directly though just to be sure.

I hope that helps.

thanks a lot for the info... i figured it would be similar to the dress code in the states. I just wasn't sure if teacher's are allowed to wear sleeveless shirts because of the fact of no air conditioning in the public schools. I wouldn't wear thinly strapped shirts, but maybe a thicker strapped nice shirt. thanks again!

That's true about the shirts. Most schools give the rule for female teachers that they can wear tank-style shirts so long as they can also wear a bra with straps that do not show. (in other words, no spaghetti straps, but a little thicker - covering bra straps - is fine) If the top needs a strapless bra, they don't want it warn to school for work days. 'Best of luck with the new school year! Feel free to PM me if you want me to put you in touch with teachers on the island or if you want to share where you are working. 🙂

That sounds great. I should be getting my placement within the month so I will definitely keep you in mind when I find out what school I am in. Are you a teacher also?
