Want to try surfing this holiday season. Anyone know where one could rent, use a surfboard?
Also, will be on St Thomas for the holidays. Which bars, restaurants have good happy hours.

Hull Bay is the main place for surfing. They rent boards there. Also SUP. You can have greenies with some interesting characters there, too.

Fish Tails has a great HH 3-6pm.

EE is right Hull bay is probably the only place you may catch a "swell" If there are locals there riding be very respectful I've heard of tourist being chased out of their spot and on one occasion a surf board getting snapped in half. Good luck Justin

Idiots who don't go along with local mores will have problems wherever they travel and I do think this particular comment is rather out of whack. Locals will rather chase off a mouthy nevbie who doesn't "get it" after a couple of times way before chasing off a visitor. Homer at the dive shop is more than happy to welcome visitors.

Just remember that the surfing at Hull Bay is very much off and on. We just don't get that much surf, period, but Hull Bay is "the" spot when conditions are right. Just don't expect big Hawaii rollers and remember that rubbing out atop those rocks/coral can be very painful. Cheers!

Botany Bay has hood surfing, too. It just takes a good walk to get there. I don't know where you'd get a surfboard, though.

Yep, Fish Tails happy hour. There's Caribbean Saloon who has a good happy hour. Big Bambooze has a burger happy hour. ITP has a good happy hour, as well. Torcida Taco has a taco happy hour, too.

If the conditions are correct, outside Cinnomon breaks along the reef. The dive shop sometimes has a soft board, sometimes not. Call ahead.
Decent surfing on tortala.

Hull bay is a tough hood in general, not just in the water. Not everbody who surfs Hull is from the northside.

Very confused about that comment. Could you explain?

To clarify:

Surfboards are basically classified as long v short. Beginner long boards are generally soft (more foam than fiber glass) Soft board are typically more stable and don't hurt as much when they wack you on the head. Personally I would recommend a soft board for beginners.

The breaking reef outside Cinnamon is to the side of the island, pretty visible if conditions are correct. Half the fun is paddling out.

Link to table with VI surf spots. (VI surf is very iffy and condition dependant)

Link to Hull Bay stats: (data from buoys, no boots on the ground report today)

Don't go alone. Bring a freind, someone with connections, who knows the spot. Wear sun block. Have fun!!!

That doesn't clarify at all. You said, "Hull bay is a tough hood in general, not just in the water." And now you've added, "Don't go alone. Bring a freind (sic), someone with connections, who knows the spot." That's what is being questioned because, with all due respect, your choice of words seems to indicate that Hull Bay isn't a safe area for some reason and that anyone going there should exercise more than due diligence. Thanks for further clarification.

@oldtart: My bad, dude...misunderstood your request for clarification...thought you wanted more scoop on first-time surfing in the VI. ( aka:
oldtart learning a new trick)

If you're seeking specific information about specific surf spots, may I suggest opening a new thread or check-out a surfing specific board. Since you asked about surfing safety, I'll offer my 2cents. "Bring a friend", applies to surfing (or any open water sport, SUP, diving, kiting) at Hull, Caret, Ditch Plains, Nosara, C-Street, Holgate, Trestles, K-58, or anyware in between. A freind with local knowelge and coonections may help ease the learning curve and act as back-up if needed.

In my experience, some spots have an "exclusionary vibe", not just in the line-up but on land as well. If you do decide to rent a board and venture out into the waves for your first time, you'll see what I mean, or not. Perhaps you, oldtart, could post back about your individual surfing experience, which break is best; then, add some helpful input to the discussion.

Peace on earth and good will toward men...
