Summer in St. Croix?
What a great discussion board. I am very interested to hear your feedback on my questions about moving to St. Croix.
I was extended an offer for a non-paying internship in Christiansted for the summer. I want to make sure my expectations are right before I accept.
I am 27 years old and concerned that I will not meet many ex-Pats my age. Before I sound too closed-minded, I am really excited about learning about new cultures, and meeting the island locals. I also drinking a beer with someone across generational lines, and it sounds like you can start a conversation with just about anybody down here.
But I would also like to be able to make some close friends with my peers down here, but it sounds like many people here are slightly older--twentysomethings from the states don't seem to be here in large numbers, either as tourists or residents.
In the same way, it sounds like many people come down here are married, newlyweds, etc-- Virgin Islands is obviously a romantic destination, to live or visit. What sort of expectations should a single guy my age have about being able to meet interesting girls down here, who aren't already attached?
Again, I would be here in the summer and on St. Croix, which seem to be both the low season for tourists and the most laid-back island--which are good in many ways, but maybe not for meeting new friends.
One of the things I am really interested in doing down there would be sailing. But I can't afford it (I'm a student). Are there sailing clubs that might make this possible? Any suggestions how I could make this happen? If there were it would be a factor in accepting.
I've seen the general prices on this site. But, I know I would specifically want to live in Christiansted. And I am looking for housing for a student/internship type budget--not beachfront property! Is there stuff around 500-600/month? What type of rent should I expect?
I have to make my decision by Monday, so hopefully I will get some good feedback! Thank you so much in advance!
Let's start with rentals. June is a slower month so there will probably be several small apartments in homes available. You might find something for around $600, but most are somewhat more. Get a copy of the AVIS and you will find ads for apartments. Also give a callto some of the rental agents listed on this and other sites.
As far as meeting people. There are always young people around who are approachable. The "party" scene here is somewhat more subdued than on STT.
Transportation might be a problem but if you are willing to be flexible you can always get to where you want to go.
As far as meeting single ladies...just remember, since it is something like 7 men to one woman for white ex-pats...you never lose your girlfriend here in the VI...you just lose your turn!
Why is there such a disproportionate balance? Or are you just kidding?
If the mid-twenties ex-pat single scene is that tough, maybe I should hold off on an extended vacation to STX until I've got a significant other to bring with me from the States.
That's a good question. Dunno why it is so out of kilter...but it is. Luckily there are always tourists to keep you occupied! I know they were a good source of 'occupation' for me when I worked at a resort here...before I was married. 🙂
I heard that summer was the off-season. A friend who had this internship earlier told me that he never saw any cruise ships on STX the summer he worked there.
Besides, aren't virtually all of these tourists newlyweds and couples? I feel like I'm setting myself up for disappointment if I'm expecting to hang with tourists looking to party.
Thanks,
J
