Sugar Beach
Planning my "2nd Annual PMV," this time to STX and STJ, a week on each island, January or February.
Someone recommended I stay at Sugar Beach while on STX. Any thoughts?
Any recommendations for STJ?
There are some very nice units at Sugar Beach. They are privately owned. There is a nice sandy beach and apooland tennis. The location is central, near shopping and C-sted. Then there is the low income housing in the neighborhood which is a turnoff for some. They have security and an on site manager. The property isn't gated. The set up offers privacy and a niece view of Christiansted Harbour.
It's on "condo row" along with Club St. Croix , Colony Cove and Mill Harbour.
For a one week Stay, I think Hotel on the Cay is the big bang for the buck. They have refurbished a lot of the units, cute beach, Breakfast and lunch at the Harbor Master, short boat trip to town.
The ferry can be an inconvenience, though, in my opinion. You can't just bring your stuff to the room, you have to put it on the boat and take it over. Also, if you're grocery shopping (as their restaurant is only open during the day and Tuesday night) then you have to pack up all the bags in your suitcase and put it on the boat. And the ferry stops at midnight. Other than that, it's the only beach in Christiansted so that's kind of cool. January-February is a very busy time for hotels. The Hovensa Turn Around is happening then with lots of hotels being booked up. President's Day Weekend is always busy and we should be getting 5-8 cruise ships per month by then. Book early!
Just a point of reference, The Ferry doesn't stop at midnight, Hotel guest make arrangements for later pick or you just call the Office. Freddy or the other Boat Captains always help with the luggage and day time Monday thru Sunday the maintenace people will take your stuff to the office. It's not the Ritz but people that have stayed there come back year after year.
I stayed at sugar beach for my PMV's... Good bang for the buck and a nice beach view.....however
WAPA right next door and the housing project behind isnt so nice, and neither were the brown recluse bite(S) i got while i was there. Hell on earth when you get bitten by them. I think it was because i was in a room that wasnt used much, the AC was always on and there were cockroaches all over= spider haven. They bit me wile i slept and i never felt the bites. Scary...very scary
Are brown recluse spiders more common in STX than STT? Are there parts of STX where they are more common?
*The ferry can be an inconvenience*
You need a ferry to get to Sugar Beach Hotel?
Edward- the Ferry is to get to Hotel on the Cay (it takes about 90 seconds) which is located on a small island in the harbor in Christiansted. Sugar Beach in on the main island - no ferry needed.
i've been bitten by a brown recluse...it was terrible. i didn't realize it until my knee started to really hurt and looked like nothing i had ever seen before. my doctor said we're not even supposed to have them here and was stunned that i was bit by one. my luck. i've never actually seen one...i think i'd die if i did, lol
I think it just depends. I've been here for 6 years and have never seen one.
and i was here for a week and got bitten twice in 2 days... go figure!
