Successful Renting
As many of you know, my husband moved to STT about a month ago. I will be joining him in August with our new baby. For the last month, he has been living like a nomad going from place to place staying with people he has met while looking for the "perfect" rental. Well (Yeah!) he found it.
It's about a mile from the University and is owned by a local, native widowed lady. Her son has lived in it up until now, so she is renting it to us for quite cheep so she doesn't have to live alone (she lives in the upstairs unit). Because her son is moving out, she is letting us use all of the furniture in there (yeah!!!) so we don't have to worry about shipping costs of bringing our own stuff down (we're only going to be there for a year or so, so this is perfect!) She has no problem with us bringing our dogs, in fact she has two of her own. Her sons are very excited that a "good family" is living with their mom, and according to them, their mom has been bragging to all of her friends that she had a University professor living with her. My husband has already fallen in love with this little lady, and he said that she is SO excited for me and "her new grandbaby" to move in.
The point of this post is 1) to thank all of you once again for all of your help answering my questions (I'm sure I'll have more to come), and 2) to tell all of you looking to move down soon to listen to the "locals." Staying in temporary housing while looking in the local paper and driving around looking for rentals was not exactly what my type-A personality was comfortable with. But everyone on here, and every local my husband met, encouraged us to take our time and search in this manner. And...it worked! In fact, it worked out even better than I could have hoped.
So...listen to the locals! Even if you think they sound "fussy" or their suggestions don't seem quite right to you, remember they've been there and done that. They usually are trying to help, not lead you astray. Take their advice and you just might end up thankful that you did.
Congratulations (on all fronts)! That sounds *wonderful*. Welcome home!
Great news! Sounds like you have a grandma built in to spoil the baby.
So often this is what happens.
Kristi,
I am so happy for you....you are so wonderful and I am so happy you found a great place with a great woman to share you experience in STT with.
Much great things come to those who wait.
Kim
Kim, I really appreciate your being so patient with me and my husband. i can't wait to meet you when you make your move down!
hi
i am a freshly-accepted grad student in the marine science department at UVI and am in the beginning stages of finding a place to live by the beginning of the fall semester. i read your recent posting on the trials of finding a place-- am glad it worked out for you! also, i was wondering if you had any good leads on an apartment near the university, either one or two bedrooms...and is the best way to find a place simply to fly out there and rent a car and drive around??? i can afford only one trip there this summer so i want to make the most of it. your suggestions would be so helpful! thanks
chris
