STX
Looking for your views and comments of owning property on the East End, West End, North, or South part of St. Croix. - What do you like, or dislike, your concerns or comments.
Try searching through the archives to find some answers in case you don't get many up front. Also the best advice I got and continue to give is to live here for 6 months to a year to find which part of the island you like. They vary a great deal on stx and everyone loves one side more then the other for different reasons. You really need to give island living a chance for a year or so and see if its meant for you. Selling a house here can easily take a year and you don't want to be stuck if you dont like it. Owning a house here can definitely be a full time job with the maintenance and upkeep.
I like the north west by Carambola. There are three gated comunities Hibiscus Point, Hard Labor and The River. They are green with mature trees and secluded.
We prefer the North Shore. We have a condo therem and just bought land to build a house.
To us, IOHO, the east end is too dry and far from everything, and the West end is a little too depressed.
the middle doesn't have the ocean breezes.
The east end has two golf courses, the yacht club, the casino, many great restraunts and it is quicker to get to Gallows Bay and Christiansted than from the North Shore.
Dry also means fewer bugs and less humidity.

I don't play golf, nor do I gamble. I'm only 60, maybe when I get old I'll take those up. 🙂 LOL. The East end reminds me too much of AZ untill I look out at the ocean 🙂 The North Shore is closer to the dive spots. 🙂 Yes I do have to drive thru Csted to get to Gallows Bay.
I find that most of the big stuff is on the Queen Mary. It seems like only the east end is out of the way but not quiet like the north.
Thanks everybody for your comments. They were all interesting and honest. We've been visiting STX since 1985 and we finally purchased a lot ( well if we ever close we will have purchased a lot) on the East End. It would be closer to our boat and we like the lower humidity and the eastern exposures we have for the breeze. In addition, we have many friends in the shops and hotels as well as the harbor in Christiansted and think we will enjoy being closer to Christiansted. Thanks again for your input.
Ya well it sounds like you already no what you like. That is one of the best things about stx its very differint for north, south east, west.

I just find it interesting that most people have very strong feelings about which part of the island they like. And the reasons are all very different and they don't have a problem telling you exactly what they think. I like that a lot. It was a difficult decision for us to make because there really isn't any part of STX that we don't like (except maybe near Hovensa)
Well there was allot of parts we did not like. When looking in are price range we got more than frustrated.Don't wont to say were because don't want to offend anyone that is probable wye not to many response on this. I no it is a question many have interest but people seem nerves because the have and have not thing. That being said the east end might have the best weather in the world. It can be raining all day in north A go east and its perfect.
If you're going to work, live on the same side of the island as your job. Having a 20-40 minute commute to work every day gets old fast.
Linda J..............."20 to 40 minute commute" This makes me smile,Can't wait to be there.:)
Depends on whether I'm traveling during rush hour. Also, with so few alternative routes, any accident can tie things up indefinitely. Or any hard rain and you have low-spot flooding.
Where I live is to important on that island to care where I work.
I so agree with Linda. I came from Phoenix, where we would drive 50 miles to go to someone's house for dinner. Here, the roads are bad, it is slow-going, you often have to stop for someone talking on the side of the road, or because there is water falling from the sky, or there is a goat standing in the middle of the road.. for a nice sunday drive, I LOVE driving all the way around the island... for a work commute, it sucks. It is pretty importat to live near where you work, or get a job near where you live.
This is one of those things newcomers never believe. After you have lived here a while, you will soon loose your desire to spend 30 or 40 minutes to go 15 miles.
Everything takes longer to do down here. And you have to figure it into your day. Its going to take me 25 to 30 minutes to get to Kmart which is maybe 15 miles away, spend a hour and a half at best in there (if they have more then 2 cashiers working), 30 minutes to an hour at the bank, etc
I have been to both kmarts they are grate. I do not want to live any were near them that is my point. It is bad for home values to build there. If you buy don't want your house to be worth less than you paid.
