Wasn’t impressed with either incarnation of the brew pub for both beer or food
Went to Brew STX on NYE for the first time in a looong time. Kurt Schindler was playing, place was hopping. Went to the bar and waited FOREVER for service. It was borderline strange: I stood there for at least 5-10 minutes and none of the bartenders even acknowledged me, which was odd since there was no one else at the bar! Finally I said "the hell with this" and walked over the the Mill Bar, where I got served instantly.
Back in the day, when Mikey and Shupe were the head bartenders at Brew Pub, sometimes they would ignore people like that. I knew them, so it never happened to me. But, now it looks like no one is safe from being ignored there. Screw that place. After about 1,000 visits over the years, I don't think I'll ever return. I don't need to go anywhere that thinks it's above the little things like serving customers.
Ironically, Shupes on the Boardwalk always has great service and AMAZING burgers. So, there's that.

aren't both run by shupe?

That's the ironic part.

Ding! Ding! Give Scubadoo a cigar. 🙂
I have noticed this same thing at Brew from the bartenders. Don't go to the boardwalk that often but it happened several times there! Also from the older, big grey haired guy at Shupe's. It's like check to see if someone is standing there needing something with $ outstretched in hand before you wash glasses for 5 minutes or just stand there. The You Are Here bartender has been good though.
went to the buccaneer for dinner friday. we go to a special place once a year for christmas dinner.
hubby had the smoked seafood pasta. i had the crispy thai chicken
my food was delicious. plenty of chicken. not enough vegies though.
hubby was not happy with his meal. it had scallops muscles and shrimp. the biggest of all three of those was less than 1/2 inch. most were smaller than a dime. we expected normal sized shrimp etc... disappointing to be sure.
but the appetizer was divine. lamb chops with hummus
We also dined at the Buc one night after Kendrick took over the kitchen. Haven't been back after that experience.
The dinner menu prices were way too high compared to before he came on board, and our meals were nothing special. Plenty of other excellent restaurants on island without the overpriced menu.

When I dine at The Buccaneer, I expect to pay five star resort prices, not local restaurant prices. I had several excellent meals while Dave Kendrick was the chef and I look forward to trying out their new little restaurant in town.
Since we have been here for the winter, we have ate 2x at The Palms @ Pelican Cove. Both times our meals were well prepared, delicious, & modestly priced. Beverage prices during Happy Hour are very reasonable & service was good.

Well that's good to hear since they've been struggling a bit with the hurricanes and new owner's. Have you posted a TA review?
forgive me for asking, but where is the palms again

Go down the road at Gas City toward Sugar Mill Vet & the ocean. At 2nd road to the right turn right. Palms Restaurant is on left several hundred yds
Word is that Above the Cliff STX is closed for good.
Chris Hocking ( chef/owner) sold or is still in the process of selling all kitchen equipment. The owner of the building/land is too cheap to pay for the repair of a hurricane damaged roof.

Scubadoo - I posted a very positive TA review for The Palms Restaurant & also included a picture I had taken.
thank you for the replies
Just wanted to reiterate on this thread something I posted on another one about the "new" Brew STX.
I've been really impressed with the reboot of Brew STX. The beers I've had in the past few weeks have been very good--stateside quality, I think, which isn't something I've been able to say in a long time about them. And the brand-new menu is really, really good. Great variety, including a lot of healthful choices, and the quality of what I've had has been top notch. For those of you who haven't been there in a while because of what it once was (especially as the old brewpub before Shupe took over), I think you should give it a new look.
Congrats to Shupe for breathing new life into what had become a stagnant venue.

See went to brew and thought it was a good different menu
The Vinow guide needs to be updated- We were at EAT @ Cane Bay two weeks ago and it had just reopened. Great to be there, "just like old times" and had a really nice lunch.
Also loved Rowdy Joe's and Flyers (I understand the two owners split). Flyers got the great ICE CREAM!!!
anyone else not thrilled with balter? seems the hype is more than the quality.
dont need to go back. not much variety and things just didnt sound good. ended up with the tenderloin, while it was cooked very nice was nothing special. other people i was with had the rabbit pasta. but nothing special, except it seems the pasta was made fresh.
Balter has been a disappointment to me from from the start. I never liked their Caribbean themed dishes that they opened with initially and I haven't heard many good reviews since. I've tried to like it but to me its just over-priced and pretentious. It is a great space but they could do so much better with a menu that appeals to a broader base. That's my two cents.
BTW...the original balter Chef Digby Stridiron was recently fired from Parcel 32 in Charleston. I guess they didn't like the food either. Here's the link:
I didn't get that from the article. Sounds like there were other issues going on at the restaurant as well.
