mmm, their chickpea fries are sooo good!
Just to chime in - Top Hat is great danish comfort food. Their wine tastings are fun too! Case place - burgers taste like the gas from the grill. The smoking will keep me from even entering to get take out. Bombay Burgers are not bad..but they are not great. Pickled greek's food is good and reasonably priced. Peter is cool about corkage (since his wine list consists of red or white). It still feels like it could use a good cleaning and sprucing up inside though...even though I know he has put a lot of work into it. And while I'm at it, let's not forget good local west Indian food for lunch. Harvey's makes a mean stew goat. Again with Cheeseburgers? blech.
I was inthe neighborhood visiting with a friend Thursday and we had lunch at Lori's Deli. I had the shrimp tacos special, and oh my, they were really good! I didn't expect that from a deli, I thought we were just going to be offered sandwiches. The tacos were a special, so I don't know when they will have them again. I had never been there, but I think I found a little secret, oops, just let that one out...but for all you resaturant critics, you might want to check it out. I'll be going back, it was really good.
Harvey's!!!
Michael's Serving Spoon (little strip mall acrosss from Plaza West) has the freshest and most delicious local plates on island, imho.
Chicken Shack, if you like salt fish try to get their salt fish salad! The stewed saltfish is also great, but I'm loving the saltfish salad there. More like a cold saltfish with provision, peppers, onions and a vinegar base. I could eat it breakfast lunch and dinner, but it's only offered on occassion.
Has anyone tried Mufungo on island? there is a bar out near Whim plantation that has a Mufungo sign...anyone tried it there or anywhere else on STX? It's served all over Puert Rico so it's hard to believe there is not more here. Anyone?
One of my favorite things about a trip to San Juan is the shrimp mogunfo at a couple of little back street eateries. I have often wanted to stop at the place near Whim, but just haven't done so yet. One day we will be going by when we're hungry and they have the mofungo sign out. In the meantime, I would also be interested to know if anyone has tried it, or other places on STX with mofungo.
Yum-- now I have something new to try when back on the island:Mofungo!
Lori's Deli (and I'm assuming you're talking about the one at Beeston Hill) was a surprise to us,too. We never get sandwiches there anymore, even though they're delicious. We get the Shepards pie,Chicken pot pie, meatloaf, etc. Whatever she's got for the day is usually wonderful. The smell alone when you walk in the door is out of this world! I would love to train in that kitchen for a month. I might actually learn how to cook after all these years of plodding along.
Any new info on the sports bar/restaurant that is opening up where Ono's used to be?
New bar where Ono's was ? Someone fill me in please.
It's called Mahagony, and run by the same guy that used to run Sandbar. They have bar food like burgers and wings. From what I have heard, its overpriced, and not too impressive.
Thanks STXEM.
How long has Mahogany's been there and open ? What is going on with the Sand Bar ? I see form the MLS listings, that it is not listed anymore.
Mahogany? Is this a new place I missed? Always looking for new places to check out.......anybody know anything about their hours?
For those of us who moved here post-Onos, are we talking about the place next to Club 54 on Company St?
I think it opened last Friday - same owners as 54.
CAtoSTX, Ono's is in Fredericksted, it was above Turtles deli. It's a shame they had to close very good food.
The place next to Club 54 did open last week can't remember the name though. It has a bunch of numbers in the name.
Tavern 1884
Actually, It's Tavern 1844. They had their kitchen open last week and should be serving food. It's nice in there - they don't allow smoking inside anymore so it makes it easier to breathe!
Oops, yeah 1844. What's 40 years? 😀
I went to Tavern 1844 on Friday. It's still sort of in a soft opening phase. The full plans include draft beer, Guiness, Yuengling, and possibly Harp were the 3 I heard. That will make it the only place I know of in the VI to get a draft Guiness! They are also going to have some very high end beers for sale and do "beer dinners" where they pair high end beers with food. Sounds like some good ideas, hopefully they can make it all happen!
Sean
I am still looking confirmation of this place called Mahogany's in Frederickstead. Is anyone 100% sure the old Ono's has reopened.
I'll try 1844 since they don't allow smoking inside.
Ono's is no more. It no longer exists.

Anyone got a phone number so I can confirm when they get the beer in? I'd love to surprise my husband - He would LOVE a place with Yuengling! It's a philly thing I guess!?
Noah - back me up on this - and keep it a secret!
Left a message with Joe to see when the draft will be up and running. I love a delicious half and half beer!
