Good news for the East end...I'm looking at Good Spirits' new menu. They're opening next week and slowly easing their way into full service/dinner. I'm excited since I live up the hill at the Reef! I heard they closed it in so they can have AC and have replaced the shelving of Lori's Country Store with booths and even a flat screen (so I've heard)
Good Spirits web page Looks like they haven't updated the links on their website yet, but soon come I'm sure
For those looking for more Mexican options, I think they'll fill it nicely.
Awesome news. I am at the Reef Jan-Apr as well, and am looking forward to having a really close option available for when I'm too lazy to cook (or drive to Chicken Charlie's).

Need to put in a 'plug' for No Bones Cafe over in Gallows Bay behind Schooners next to the pharmacy.
Good food, reasonable prices, nice service.
Cozy and cool.
Mostly a stateside comfort-food menu. Prime rib, meatloaf, philly cheese, burgers. Lots of good choices.
When we first came down we kindof ignored it as it's not much to look at on the outside.
Neil--we also have ignored it. We saw it every time we went to the pharmacy next door and it never occurred to us to go there.

Went to Angry Nates last night.
We had a group of 6.
The appetizers were great, we shared spring rolls and tuna bites.
For our meals some of us were happy and some were a little disappointed.
I had a ceasar salad with shrimp, the lettuce had brown edges,(I hate that) the shrimp tasted good but not overly impressed by it.
My husband had the jerked chicken and loved it, the meat was fallen off the bone.
Someone else had the seafood pasta, the seafood was overcooked. She said it was just okay.
The others had the surf and turf or turf and turf they said it was good. The steak was great.
I think Angry Nate's Jerk chicken is one of the best value dishes on the island. I've gotten their lobster once and it was overcooked, they've switch chef's a few times recently and this was with the latest chef (I believe, after Deanna). In all I am a fan of Angry Nates, they are as good of a value as you can get on island with a great view.

re: Angry Nates...
We've given it several tries and probably won't go back for a while.
Like some of the other posters have noted, their food quality has been uneven.
Example: We ordered their nachos as an appetizer the other day, and the bowl of cheese dip came with a quarter inch of grease/oil on top.
Nice view from the inside, though.
Hope they get it together.
Dinner Sat. night at The Pickled Greek. 4 apps, 4 entrees and 8 drinks, bill was $150. More food than we should have ordered. All was excellent, as well as the service. Best tasting Calamari I've had since the beach in Venezuela. Very impressed. We hadn't been since shortly after they opened, and it was much better. The only negative is the same I had before...their wine is awful! I can't believe they are still selling it.
Lunch at Rowdy Joe's today. Always good, particularly the ribs!
I'm going to throw out a recommendation that I don't think has been mentioned here on this thread...VISFI farm slow down dinners. If you don't not know, check out visfi.org. VI's only USDA certified organic producer! As much as possible all ingredients are from on farm (organic!) or otherwise locally grown.
Last night my wife and I were treated to a fantastic 6 course meal prepared by VISFI's own Chef Keith Weitzman and paired with wine by Tony Gatti of Italian VI Trading ( http://www.italianvitrading.com).
I've been to a few slow down dinners there and have NEVER been disappointed!
contact the farm crew at visfi.org for more info on the next Slow Down Dinner!
Dinner for 2....$144+?
talkin to me? Where did 144+ come from?
Heh heh...yes I was aquaponics. Aren't the slow down dinners $60/plate plus taxes and gratuities? Do they include dessert or drinks?
Me and my intensely hungover roommate ventured to North Shore for food this last sunday. He was about 1/4 functional but really put his heart out into the trip. Our first stop was Eat @ Cane Bay. We looked at the menu and my roommate was licking his chops. We sat down and the waitress looked at us and walked by a few times without a word. Then after 10 minutes she comes up and says that the kitchen closes at 4 (it is 5). My roommate was broken... he picked himself up though and said, "we need food". So we ventures to Rowdy Joes. We had the prototypical RJ experience. We sat down and the waitress brought us our drinks but never said the specials (which I found odd). He ordered the full rack of Asian ribs while I went with the Broccoli Cheddar Soup and Fish tacos. both of us got the polenta. The place was not that busy but the food was taking forever to come out. What really grinds my gears in our waitress comes over and says that it will be out in a minute and 15 minutes later... no food. Why say that if it's not true. When we got the food, it was hot and delicious. You really have to order the full rack though since the portions are small. The soup was great and the tacos were amazing as always.
To sum it up... I am boycotting Eat @ Cane Bay for not being open on a Sunday for dinner. Rowdy Joes has great food, but as usual, the service is leaves something to be desired.
With all of the good restaurants on STX, I never thought I would be recommending a gas station but I am ... We had hearing great reviews about Ziggys (formerly Smokey's next to Chicken Charlies'). We both have today off and stopped in to pick up lunch. We had soup, chili, curry chicken salad sandwich and bbq sandwich. Soooo good. I will definitely go back!! The soup was some of the best I've had on island and I'm already craving the curry chicken again!!!
goalusvi--
what kind of soup? And is it the same cook? We had some good roti pate there-- huge.
I had the chicken and potato soup. Really delicious! It's not the same cook but the new owners were trained by Smokey's wife so a couple of the really good things that people came to know her for are still available.
aussie....have you been to a slow down yet? the cost is usually $60/pp Not including drinks. It's BYODrink. For the $60 you get a 6 course meal, everything grown local and most certified organic. Fresh from the field to your plate. the funds generated go to a plethora of educational activities that benefit local kids that otherwise would never have this opportunity. In this case, it's not all about the cost of your food. If you haven't checked out the website for the activities they offer, please do. If the benefits (and the amazing) meal is not worth $60, then this place is not for you. To each his own....I know I've often spent more than $60/pp in a typical STX restaurant than had no benefit to local youths or environmental awareness, and never for a 6 course meal. To me, this is money well spent....and the freshest food on island!
If you want to meet some of the farmers, they are teaching a workshop on Friday at the Botanical Gardens on the topic of Permaculture and how the VISFI farm was initially designed with permaculture in mind. I'll post the info on the Community site here later today.
Oh yeah, when you go to the slow down dinners, you can also get a farm tour. I've seen similar farms charge $60 or so just for a tour!
Went to Rum Runners last night.
I have to say all of our meals were very good.
I had the lobster Alfredo. The lobster was cooked perfectly. I also had a good Bushwhacker.
My husband had the ribs which were delicious.
Our friend had the surf & turf which he said it was pretty good.
The service was very friendly.
I had the lobster quesadillas everyone raves about at Rumrunners the last time we were down. Well, actually they were out of lobster so I got the shrimp ones--- DELICIOUS! And loved the dipping sauce. I've heard you need to call ahead to make sure they have lobster, which I certainly will do as I love lobster anything. Oh man, this weight watchers diet is killing me:-X and I always go to food threads when I'm dieting... I'm trying to motivate myself by thinking my reward for staying on the diet now will be the food I can gorge on when I'm down on the island! *-) Right now I can't get that crab dip they have at The Case Place out of my head. It's cooked in a little dish with gooey cheese baked on top and you break off bread to dip in it.....
goalusvi-- Chicken and potato soup:YUM!
Greetings aquaponics
Sorry if my question put you on the defensive. That was not my intent.
Many thanks for all the information. I was unaware that the local kids benefited from the proceeds. I've been to the farm to buy sweet corn (it was excellent) but I have not been to a slow down dinner. Quite frankly, that's not within my budget.
Thanks for such a civil and informative response.
Paula, I didn't know Case Place had crab dip. I'm orginally from MD and I love crab dip.
I'll have to check it out. How much is it?
Thanks for letting us know about it.

Oh yeah! They have a wonderful (but VERY rich) crab dip. I don't remember the price right now, but it's an appetizer, so not that much. One day we went in for lunch and got the dip and two salads and wobbled back out. Rich enough for four people probably. And the fresh bread you pull off and dip into it makes it filling. Oh wow, I feel like Pavlovs dog just thinking about it! (darn this diet!:-X)

My problem with Rum Runners is the really cheap furniture they put in there this past year.
I understand that they needed new furniture, and wanted to buy cheap, and wanted to get a maximum number of tables in a small space, but it's not comfortable. When I go to a restaurant, I want to be able to sit back in a nice sized chair -with arms and enjoy my beer. (Same complaint about the indoor chairs at Pickled Greek). At these prices, ambience and comfort matters.
Hey there Uuaww -- let me point out some things to you.
(1) Eat @ Cane Bay only has a Sunday Brunch hours - nothing else - so you got there too late for brunch. So if you want to boycott a place for not serving Sunday dinner that's your choice. There are 2 places now in Cane bay that only do Sunday Brunch from about 10am to 3pm (Eat@Cane Bay & The Waves)
2) There are no specials at Rowdy Joes until dinner time which is 6pm. Since you went there sometime between 4&5pm -- there is no way you are going to get the dinner special for that evening as the kitchen doesn't cook "dinner specials" until 6pm. (3) I have never found RJ's to have slow service but perhaps your expectations are different.
