there are way to many restaurant "horror" stories out there, years ago on a new years eve, back in the 80's a guy asked me if there was any nuts in the linzer torte, and me not knowing that linzer torte meant almost entirely made of nuts, told the guy "i'll ask the cook" so i go back and ask the cook any nuts in the linzer and he told me no,so i go tell the guy no and he ends up in the emergency room on new years eve,i also learned along time ago to ask "are you allergic or do you just not like something say onion or something like that and you'd be surprised to find out how many people lie and say oh i just don't like this or that and just say i'm allergic,we used to get all these old ladies at the fish restaurant in MPLS and they all claimed to be allergic to this or that and special order this and special order that, the chef/owner got so tired of them he closed the placedown took his money and retired,
oh and the chef involved no longer lives on STX,he went back to the states when his crack/meth/alcohol problem got to bad
surely they did not give muslims BACON grease trw? surely you are joking.....
OT......i have three pairs of pants so far trw, three different sizes too.....still looking for more.....lightweight unno?
yes he did give muslims bacon grease, like i said he called it his muslim marinade, which i suppose is a bad thing but none of them ever went up in flames or whatever it is that bad muslims do, i dunno know what happens when the orthodox violate the food rules, nor do i care all that much, lol just shut up and eat it,dude it's one meal out of your life, and rules from 3000 years ago no longer apply, tribal crap
It makes me crazy when they charge $8 to $10 for a glass of wine when most of these Bottles cost them $15 to $20 and if you try to buy the bottle in the restaurant they want to charge $40. If they were truely serving something special I could understand the mark up. But they're making double to triple profit. Needless to say I rarely drink wine in a restaurant on stx. If you haven't tried red guatair wine, give it a try, great cheap wine.
Speaking of totally gross mark ups...
We took some friends to sharkys a couple of weeks ago for cheap burger day. Now with sharkys its cheap food and very average at best. But it can be fun place to watch a game and we've been going there since we moved on island so I was shocked when we got the bill. They charged our friends for each soft drink no free refills. In a way it was comical, the drinks were as much as the meal. I asked the waitress (also the manager) what the deal was and she said they've always done this. Now I know this is a complete lie, like I said I've been going there forever and she refused to take them off. One of the few times I've left no tip. At least put that on your menu or tell people when they ask for refills. Frankly this is the straw that broke the back for me. The food is barely average, the service has become HORRIBLE and when management wants to screw its customers. I mean $2 per soft drink? Just the first drink is like 70 percent profit, stateside I would say 90% profit. I'm not going back again.
We went to Savant last week. Hadn't been there is quite some time. I've always felt its way overpriced for the quality of the food.
App: spicy chicken skewers, jerk shrimp rolls and special mozz salad
Verdict: Chicken skewers were extremely bland and very dry due to overcooking., jerk shrimp rolls were very cheezy and bland, salad was best of the lot but bland as well.
Dinners: Crusted Cassava Wahoo, Double cut pork chop, filet & frittes
Verdict: Wahooo was good, Pork chop had and excellent flavor and sauce but was very dry (order Medium and came well done) and the grits that came with it were nicely spiced, Filet was also over cooked but had a great sauce the frittes it came with tasted like cardboard. Not even any salt and pepper on them.
Service: Was very absented minded. Never refilled water and had to ask 3 to 4 times every time friends wanted another wine. She was very nice however.
Final Verdict: Still overpriced for what you get, probably be another year before I give it another try.
....gets out the popcorn and snowcaps to watch the show 😛
About the wine situation.... go to Quality, near food town, they actually have a great selection of wine for VERY reasonable prices. $10 for a bottle of Jacobs Creek merlot (05) Tasty and doesnt make my mouth shrivel up with bitter tannin taste!
I'm a west-ender and am always looking for new places to have dinner. I just got back from my third great experience at Ono's. If you haven't been there, GO! The wait staff and bartenders are friendly and terrific and the chef is stupendous. It is hard to have a favorite at Ono's - the menu changes almost every day so you never can tell what you will be offered. I am a salad lover so I have had three favorites! - the spinach salad is unbelievable, the Wedge is super and the Classic Caesar is too good to be believed - anchovies and hot croutons with a dressing that does not taste pre-made - wow!
The prices may look steep to some but the food value is terrific. The portion size makes the price worthwhile. A friend ordered the prime rib tonight and it was enormous as well as perfectly cooked with a horseradish sauce that is to die for. The Scampi Stuffed Pablano Chili is terrific. I hope it is on the menu when you visit!
For an after dinner drink, try the kahlua, straight up! We had a wonderful meal tonight. Hope you all enjoy Ono's as much as I do. I can't wait to see what treats we will be offered next.
I'm glad my Ono's experience wasn't like yours. I think they have the best Caesar salad on the island - classic and not made with pre-bottled dressing. I really appreciate the anchovies and the hot croutons! Just a suggestion - don't look at to go food as a signature of any restaurant. Some things, like a classic alfredo (not jarred) don't stand up well to the time it takes to get them home to eat. Take a little time, breathe deeply and enjoy the food served the way the chef prepared it - not older and cooler.
Back to Restaurant Reviews:
If there's a better Reuben and faster lunch service on the island than Paradise Cafe in Csted, I haven't found it.
Daughter had their veggie sandwich and said it was terrific. Free refills too.
i love the veggie burger at Paradise Cafe and their pancakes are awesome.
The Chicken Shack in LeReine is a great value too, and one of my favorites. One can get a full meal for under $10, and still have some left for the next day's snack. There's a reason why the parking lot is always full...it's great!
i love the veggie burger at Paradise Cafe and their pancakes are awesome.
Are you speaking of the burger or the sandwich?
My daughter had the fresh sandwich wrapped in the pita. I'm not a vegetarian but did get a bite and it was very good.
My only complaint is that sometimes the staff is a little too friendly. *-)
the actual veggie burger pattie. it's so good with grilled mushrooms and their honey mustard 🙂
i've always wanted to try the veggie sandwich...and now i will!
Yeah, i love a friendly waitperson but not to sit and talk to me for hours while i'm trying to eat! LOL i guess i'd rather have over-friendly than not.
TRW in three, ...two, .....one........
LOL! 🙂
Check out Le'Khaime in princess if you want some healty soups!. Its in the paint locker building right near 5 corners. Its all heath food, and the vegan stuff is pricey(im not vegan, i eat everything), but when i feel like being healthy i go for their soup. Its Amazing Soup to put it mildly....
The best part $3 for a HUGE cup/bowl/Vat lol
Mon-vegatable
Tues-Creamy Potato
Wed-Creamy Coconut with provisions<--My favorite!!
Thur-Creamy Green Split Pea
Fri-Brown lentil
wow! i've never been in there before, but those soups sound good. $3?! can't beat that - even Progreso cans go for $3-4, lol
She also makes her own veggie burgers and they are very good--lots of garlic.
Had the absolute best reuben this week at Turtle's Deli. It was one of the specials. Three slices of bread. 2 were marble rye on the top and bottom, in the middle was a thick slice of pumpernickle. Had a choice of pastrami or corned beef or both. Went for both. The slaw and dressing were awesome. Came out 3 inches thick or maybe 4. Shared the sammie with the wife, 2 bags of chips, and 2 drinks.
$16. Could barely finish half of this monster!
Also love the reuben at Paradise Cafe.
Ono's upstairs from Turtles last week on a friday night. Awesome food, atmosphere, and staff! Seems Sean flys in fresh fish a couple times a week and you can tell. Tasted very fresh and delicious. Will return soon.
betty you can bring your own wine with you and pay a "corkage" fee of 15 to 20 dollars, any "decent" restaurant will allow this
I don't drink enough to make the $15 dollar a visit fee worth it. But I appreciate the info and I'm sure someone else will too. 🙂 But really if I have to pay $15 or $20 that will make the wine the same price as what they are selling...lol...they win either way
And I lurve Turtles Deli. It always makes a huge difference when a sandwich shop makes their own bread. And there brownies are very decadent.
If you haven't had a panni at the Deck Bar give them a try. Cheap sandwiches that are really pretty good. They always have a "special" sandwich and they also have a menu. Phil bartends and cooks half the week and he is truly a delight to be around.
We usually only go to the Deck Bar on our way to somewhere else, as I imagine a lot of people do, but we have a friend who was just saying this evening what an interesting guy Phil is. I agree about the corkage. Nice option, if it's a special occasion, though.
phil used to work at parrots cove but they partied there too much with the booze and coke so he quit,he's like me in wanting to work at a "family" place or a place that shuts down after dinner, great guy
Went to Ono's a few weeks back the atmosphere is great food pretty good. Started with the muscles they were excellent. Had the softshell crab the spicey romulade wasn't and disappointed but the crab was cooked well. My friend ordered the fish and it was spoiled....she sent it back and with much apologies they replaced her entry free of charge (as they should!) she got the cuban pork it was delic. The choco cake for desert was not so good kind of tasted like the frosting had turned... so kind of hit or miss...
Sunday brunch at Sand Castle is my new favorite thing great food and reasonably priced.
just had lunch at the bombay club,14 years and i've never been there,i had the salmon and broccoli quiche with a side salad, the quiche was good but 2 of the bites were really salty,it was 15bucks with the tip and iced tea
