Headline: Residents West of the Anguilla Landfill Advised to Remain Indoors, Keep Windows Closed, Fire Continues to Flare
A fire that broke out at the Anguilla Landfill earlier today has reignited. Firefighters continue to battle the blaze located at the southeast portion of the landfill.
VI Waste Management Authority officials are advising residents in close proximity west of the landfill, especially those with compromised immune systems, to remain indoors and to keep windows closed. Motorists are also advised to avoid traveling along Airport Road until further notice.
Waste Management is also announcing that the Landfill and Transfer Station will be closed until further notice.
Thanks, CruzanIron!
Where there are landfills, there are usually a number of above ground and underground fires burning at any given time.
In actuality, we don't have a landfill. We have a dump.
Sorry, wrong verbage...dump it is!
Vicanuck---the dump is by the airport.
Wise planning of the government to locate the dump next to the airport. It must make an interesting first impression when landing...
thought they had to move it due to the danger of birds/planes
Planes land from the West, dump is to to the East. There are still plenty of other "interesting" sites to see while landing.
Taking off over a refinery. That's something that always puzzled me.

The planes I fly on turn right or left after take off and don't fly over the (closed) refinery.
If you don't fly over it you can get a better view from the air. Maybe they should fly over it:D
I would imagine the refinery was a restricted airspace when functioning. No flyovers.

Chief: Only way to stop fire is dig into landfill

Of course if VIWMA actually knew how to manage waste and just not contracts for waste haulers, this situation could have been avoided.
