Hey all -
I am AMAZED by what a great resource you have going here! I wish I had the time to go through and read every post (just like I wish I was really relocating to the islands).
There's a chance that I might have an opportunity to take a month off from my job this January to go on an "island adventure" with my husband, who's self-employed. We're thinking about making a trip to the Virgin Islands. We're both pretty athletic and adventurous, and pretty much non-planners as far as vacations go.
What I'm envisioning is just coming down with our backpacks full of gear (tent, sleeping bag, clothes, basic necessities) and figuring out what we'll do when we get there. Of course I realize it might be a good idea to plan a little further ahead than that!
Any suggestions for a month-long adventure? We would love to camp, maybe rent a boat, find some cheap lodging (as basic as you could get), do some exploring.
Any and all input would be welcome!!!
Thanks,
Julie
p.s. Also wondering if we could reasonably get around for a month if we just brought our bikes...

Ther are some great camp grounds on ST.John Maho Bay Camps(340)715-0500,Tortola at Brewers Bay(284)494-3463, and Virgin Gorda . You can take ferries to all of them. I've always wanted to do that. It Would be a realy cool trip.Even Anagada would let you camp there too.The ferrie only runs to Anagada on wednesday from Virgin Gorda. I dont know how you would make reservations but with a little research you could figure it out. Even St.Croix has a campground in the rain forest. It is callde Mt Victory Camp. Maby you could start by contacting them(340)772-1651. Good luck and have a great time. The ferrie runs from STX to STT from October on to sometime in the spring.I would suggest camping in a camp ground. You should not just pitch your tent anywhere. I wish I was going too. Remember that Virgin Gorda,Tortola and Anagada are Britsh virgin Islands so bring a passport.

Aren't those camp grounds reserved months (years?) in advance? I would be very cautious about going to the islands in the height of the season without any reservations.

Hello Julie,

Welcome to the board. This board and site are living/moving related. We have a sister site/board for travel - so you might check it out at http://www.vinow.com.

I'll add http://cinnamonbay.com/ to Aaron's list of campgrounds, it’s on St. John. I would recommend calling to make reservations, particularly in January. There are also small inns - they might be an option too.

Riding bikes as a form of transportation isn't big here because of the terrain, roads, drivers. That said there are a couple places to rent them if you do decide you want to give it a shot. You listed St. Croix in your subject line; it is the most bike friendly of the USVI islands.

You could start out on St. Croix. The ferry should be operating in January, so you could take it over to St. Thomas. Then visit Water Island from St. Thomas. Continue on to St. John. And then the BVI islands. Return to St. Thomas to fly back home. Do some more research on it and have a good time.
