I'm not quite sure if this on an earlier thread so please forgive me in advance if it is.
I'm trying to figure out how much pecentage wise does the government get of my income. Is there a local tax in STX as well as an island tax that is comparable to a state tax and is the federal tax the same rate??? I'm not even sure if I understand what I just wrote I just want to make sure I'm not taking home 1/3 of the paycheck I started with.

Hello Becky,

No state tax... we aren't a state.

We do pay federal income tax (it stays in the USVI).

Uh, yeah. No "state" tax, but people wait YEARS to get their federal/VI tax returns. I'm still waiting on 2002. I have friends who are still waiting for refunds from 1999 and 2000. The best way to get around this, apparently, is to claim enough exemptions that you end up OWING tax, rather than waiting for a refund.
