STX holiday charity
Hi all,
I'm new to this board and the Islands. My husband and I are in the process of relocating to St. Croix. We've really enjoyed reading the boards and they have been very helpful to us in planning our move.
We are here for the holidays and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good charity to donate to that would help folks with the holidays. Instead of exchanging presents, parents and I decided to do this for each other this year. I'd love it if I could find a place that collects children's and/or families' wishes for the holidays and either donate gifts or money to fulfill them. Thanks so much for your help, Kim
Hi Everyone,
I thought I would pass this information along, in case anyone is interested. The Department of Human Services and Intervention unit is sponsoring "adopt a family" holiday program. I spoke with Miss Bradford at the unit to get more details. They are looking for folks to donate a Christmas dinner for families who have required intervention from their agency.
The simplest way to participate is to purchase a gift check at the grocery store (Miss Bradford mentioned the Plaza Extra grocery store) and drop the gift certificate off at her office. When I asked her how much I should purchase for the gift certificate, she said people typically donate about $100 per family (usually 4 people), but that any amount would be welcomed (I'm sure they can aggregate gift certificates). There are other ways to help and you can contact Miss Bradford to find out what folks have done in the past. A gift certificate just seemed the most logical choice for me because the family could pick out the foods they like best.
Miss Bradford is located at 6179 Estate Anna's Hope--their office is in the Head Start complex and they are next to public works. I am not terribly familiar with the area, but you could call Ms. Bradford for directions and more information at 773-5303 for St. Croix. If you do decide to donate, I would recommend calling Ms. Bradford to let her know when you are coming by to drop off your donation.
I gather the need is great and it didn't sound like they have a lot of people in St. Croix participating for the upcoming holiday season (they do a similar program for Thanksgiving, so perhaps that's the reason). If you are interested in doing this in St. Thomas, the Daily News had a short paragraph on the "Adopt a Family" program, on 12/5/07 with a St. Thomas phone number of 774-4393. Kim
Great idea. Thanks for posting it!
