STX Boat Parade
Ric and I went to the boat parade last night, us, and every other person on-island, it seemed. We had dinner at Angry Nates (formerly the MIx) and had a front row seat for the parade. Beautiful evening, full moon, and about 20 boats. I like having this close to Christmas, it give Chirstmas visitors and kids coming home from college a chance to participate.
A good time was had by all.
I think is was the best parade to date; I also liked it close to Christmas, it let visitors see another wonderful thing about St Croix.
We had dinner at Zebos after and it was great; I think there is finally a restaurant that will do well in the location.
Jim and I participated and when we came around the corner in boat 12 we were amazed at how many people were on shore. It was AWSOME! And it sounded amazing with everyone clapping and yelling.
I was very impressed with the amount and quality of the entrants. Very nicely done...the fireworks were much better than I expected...and it was a very nice atmosphere...very friendly, open , warm...no one getting out of hand or causing trouble...it was really nice.
It was a fun night. The only glitch was when a flare was set off by the last boat starting their first go-around and the Hovensa fireworks guys thought that meant they were supposed to start setting off the fireworks display. The fireworks were really supposed to start as the last boat was wrapping up their second trip around the harbor, so the overall event was a bit shorter than expected.
Most of the boat owners were also happy to have it this weekend rather than a week or two ago. Many of us had family able to join us for the event this way. We did lose a couple boats that were entered because their owners were off-island by this weekend, but we picked up a couple of others; so the numbers worked out pretty well. I think about four more boats would have had us in a continuous circle as we went into the second lap.
As always it was a lot of fun seeing so many local children packed into town to view the boat parade. Many local residents don't regularly attend the Jump-up festivals or some of the wilder parades, but do bring their families to the Xmas boat parade festivities.
The judges announced the prize winners last night at an awards presentation gathering for the entrants. Aslyn won best power boat and Parrothead won best sailboat.
congratulations.
Alexandra, Parrothead was incredible. Thanks to all the paraders. The best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
