Which STX beach is your favorite and what are the things about this particular beach that make it your favorite?

Depends...
For a fun day in the sun - Rainbow beach on Sundays
For a relaxing day reading my book but with "amenities" - Buccaneer Beach (they charge at the guard gate if you are just going to the beach but I usually go and have lunch there and there is no charge)
For a decent but cheap lunch and nice beach - Hotel on the Cay (it's $4 round trip on the water taxi)
For snorkeling and solitude I will go to some of the beaches on the way out to the east end (north side) - leave nothing of value in your car or on the beach.

Cane Bay.
Nice beach, good food and drinks available from three restaurants plus a hot dog cart.

oooooo....I sense an opportunity here 😀

Before I spill the beans on the best kept secret on STT, bar none, I just wanted to let you St Thomians know that I'm open to a payoff to keep my mouth shut. LOL...I even take credit cards for your convenience 🙂

I like Cane Bay for swimming, snorkeling and food/cooking, Rainbow for swimming, beach fun and food, Carambola and/or tidal pools for fun in big wave weather, Salt River for liming/fishing/cooking/boating. Cramers for liming, cooking and conch collecting 🙂

We took a drive today from here (condo row) to Frsted up to the Butler Bay area and then down to the South Shore road and over to Cramer's Park and back home here. We stopped in a lot of obvious beach areas but my question is....On the South Shore road is there places that you can pull over and get to a beach? I saw a couple of places that look like dirt roads that go toward the water but I was unsure of whether or not it was okay to drive them to find out. I didn't know if it is safe to do this or if it was someone's property....I don't want to invade someone's privacy. Does anyone know if there is a place on the south east end to get to the water? I had this same question last time we were here but I didn't know about this board then. I thought I would be able to figure out myself this time but no luck.

Sundays at rainbow are a blast, hay penny is great for a little quieter more relaxing day (also great for dogs), sandy point is the nicest beach on island in my opinion and also a lot of fun on sundays.

Just don't dive on the beach because of turtle nests.

Ha' Penny beach is at the end of one of those dirt roads. There are two pink concrete pillars at the entrance from South Shore Road.

I would go with Ha' Penny for solidtude, very nice beach. I read somewhere on here not to long ago that some ones car was broken into recently on Ha' Penny . So take nothing you can't carry.

I think the beach with the best , cleanest, calmest water and sand on STX is the beach by Sunset Grill in Frederiksted, called Sprat Hall Beach. But, car break-ins sometimes happen. We were just down there today and our car was by itself and a known car burglar pulled up right next to it. Said hello to him and let him know we were watching the car from the beach, and he drove off.

Oh, and the Southshore dirt access roads do go to beaches, but they're so-so. Too much seaweed. Mostly used for fishing, and you need a 4 x 4 because the roads go downhill fast and are rocky. The public is entitled to go to any beach, that's why Michael Jackson didn't buy Butler Bay Plantation in F'Sted. He wanted to make the beach private, and it couldn't be done. Like you can go to the beach at Buccaneer, but then they say they have to charge you a "$4 utility fee" for the chair /towel usage, or whatever. But, I guess you get the security of parking in their lot.

They had private beaches in Florida, but the story I heard goes an attorney was jogging on one of them one day, and some private homeowner had fenced his off, and the atty got angry because he couldn't keep going and sued, and now the public has access, even if a home is beachfront.

My fave would unquestionably be Turtle Beach on Buck Island. If you're talking beaches that are on St. Croix proper, then Sandy Point would be my choice.

All those beaches are awesome. I like Ha'penny a lot, but I recently saw it on the list of the two areas which are unsafe to swim in...? I think they tested the water all over the USVI and Ha'penny and the beaches by Condo Row (by Wapa) came up with contaminants or pollutants or something to keep them from being officially swim-able.

I'm not trying to spread gossip - I saw it in the Avis a couple of weeks ago, but I can't remember the details. I love Carambola and Cane Bay because they are near me. So I didn't really obsess over the Ha'penny status.

Can someone tell me how to get to Ha' Penny Beach from the Buccaneer area? Is South Shore Road the one where you have to turn right where the main road takes a sharp left just before Cheeseburgers? And where exactly are the "pink pillars", or at least which side of the road are they on? Please pardon the dumb questions, but I'm still brand new and completely unfamiliar with the landmarks!

Thanks,
Lisa

Directions to Ha' Penny Beach from the Buccaneer:
- Go west on Rt 82 for at most 1 mile.
- Turn left/south onto Rt 62. After about 3 miles on Rt 62, the road turns sharply right and you'll be going west on the south shore. After about 2.5 more miles on 62, you'll see the pink pillars on the left/south side of the road.
- Turn left through the pink pillars and follow the dirt road south for half a mile to the beach.
