STX- Animal shelter flea market
Hi All,
I did a search on this site, and the only thing I found on the animal shelter flea market was a brief mention that they moved to Richmond. Does anyone know exactly where? I am so out of touch I didn't even know they had moved until a friend mentioned it today.. I was planning on taking a bunch of stuff there this friday, but am not sure where they are.
Thanks,
Beth
just east of olympic car rental, on same side of street, little side street. not sure when they are opening at new location. had sign on door, but i don't remember
I looked up Olympic Car Rental and they say they're in Christiansted, yet say Richmond, too. I'm not sure if that's still downtown? Or is Richmond out of town? We love to get books at the flea market--- gonna miss that old building, not the heat there, though. I can't imagine moving all that stuff out of there! Are they in a permanent place or will they have to move again? Sorry for so many questions, just want to know right where to go if we get to go down there this spring. Thanks!
Richmond is the area right before the Police Station at Basin Triangle. Next to the Post Office - still Christiansted. Across from the pink Television Station building. If you hit Charles Harwood Memorial Hospital - you've gone too far.
Richmond area is out of town......accross the street from the public tv station. It has the big post office & car rental (Olympic) in the same location...and a grocery store....bi-rite (?)....crazy busy area & NO PARKING! Being a nonprofit you have to take what you can get.....I wish them luck & sadden they had to move.
i was there this morning. They are closed today, probably trying to get organized. It looked like there is about the same amount of parking space, maybe a little more.
My understanding is they are trying to open at the new location this weekend. The move is indeed a long term lease, they had to move on a pretty short notice (one month I think) but the place they got is bigger and hopefully will work out well for them. It's not as easy to find as the old place, but once you know where to go... its just as convenient.
My directions are starting at the Orange Grove Pueblo . Head into town on the main road through Richmond. On your left you will pass the old hospital, then a school, then a series of buildings including the post office and Olympic RentaCar ... as mentioned. Once you pass the Rental car place start looking for a road that goes to the left. It is before the light. Turn left there and go straight back to a huge pink warehouse ... that's it. Not sure how they are setting it up... was only there once before they moved in. As previously posted, if you get to the light at Bassin Triangle (uniform city/police station)... you've gone too far.
The flea market is a great community resource and an important source of income for the Animal Shelter. I was out at the actual shelter today and it is looking great... lots of puppies and kittens tho... waiting for homes. They have a huge job to do on this island (sad news on the cruelty case today).... and they really depend on all of us for support... shopping at and giving to the Flea Market is a great way to help them. I hope the new place does great!
limetime2,
thanks for the great directions...perfect for directionally-challenged folks like me!(tu)
OK, I've got it now--- thanks everyone for the directions! Now let's hope we get to come down for the month and help the shelter out. Vacation isn't going according to plans this year..... I'm so glad they are in a bigger location. The heat was a killer in the old place!
Thanks for the great info. Darn, I was hoping they had moved more west. 🙂
limetime2, when I lived in STX you could drop off any donations at the Animal Shelter itself. Is that still the case?
hmmmm good question. I haven't really been heavily involved recently so I'm not sure about dropping off at the shelter. It's kinda hard (with all the critters out there ) to accomodate a drop off space at the shelter and is much better to drop off at the flea market itself. I do know that they arrange for pick-ups though and with more volunteers they could do more of this. What would be really great would be if there was a volunteer with a decent size truck or roomy SUV that would volunteer consistently on a particular day of the week..... or twice a month... and committ to doing pick-ups for the shelter on those days. Then... Jan and Melania could actually schedule pick-ups. That would be so great. If there were two sturdy persons... even better. We used to do this and we used to allow drop offs at the shelter and at another location in Gallows Bay. Need to get back to that!
OHHH>.. that just gave me an idea... I'm going to contact Gretchen (the person at the shelter in charge of the Flea Market now) and see what she thinks.
Oh... if you go check out the new place... make sure and complement all the staff and the volunteers at the shelter that made this move happen. You know that has to have been a real labor of love!
The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center Flea Market is open and will institute new operating hours this week. Now located at 151 Richmond (the first left after the Richmond Post Office/Olympic Car Rental headed east) the store will be open Tuesdays thru Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Tell a friend. . .
Thanks for your patience--
Gretchen
THANK YOU!!! Some of us were getting ready to start up a "Flea Market Anonymous" chapter!! Love the new hours and can't wait to check it out! 😀
