STT vs. STX
I am sure ya'll get this question a lot but I have to ask which island would you prefer? I know everyone will say "that's up to you and your way of living" or "you have to find out for yourself". Unfortunately, I don't have the money to visit both. I have visited STT four times in the past year but never STX. However, I have heard STX has cheaper homes but a declining economy. So for someone who is 26 years old and looking to have a good time, but have a good job with steady income and just relax and live my life in the Virgin Islands, what would you recommend or what advice can you give me on STX vs STT? I might add my sister-in-law lives on STT and I know it VERY well and feel super comfortable there, but STX's rental rates are very intriguing.
STT
I've always been in love with STX and lived here for 4 years. Never lived on STT but here's why I love STX. Not saying some of these reason don't exist in STT but here's why I love it here.
1. Space....there seems to be more room on STX and more flat lands
2. less crowded
3. A strong sense of community, and small town feel
4. True, rent is cheaper and you seem to get more house for your money here.
5. Fewer tourists. I enjoy tourists, they are fun to talk to, and I wish we had a little more, but we never seem over run.
One thing STT has that would love is the proximity to the BVI's., and more air service to the mainland. All we have is 2 daily AA flights and Delta on Saturdays for two more weeks.
Delta comes back in December with Wednesday and Saturday flights though.

STT is nice to visit (often) and easy to get to BVI from, wouldn't want to live there.
i like stx for the seemingly slower pace
I've lived on STT for over 30 years and was a frequent visitor to STX for many years, staying from a day to over a week at different times of the year. STX is a beautiful island but I'm glad STT was where I parked myself. Contrary to many people's view of STT as a "commercial" island and one overridden with tourists and traffic, it's the diversity which appeals to me. Within 10 minutes you're out of the commercial area, away from the tourists and in an infinitely quieter place.
I've lived in different parts of the world to appreciate St Croix's flatter topography and more pastural feel but the stunning vistas of STT and its mountainous terrain are breathtaking and never fail to amaze. The close proximity to St John and the BVI has afforded me sailing adventures I would never have found on STX. In every area of the island I've lived I've found a wonderful sense of community and each area has its own distinct "small town feel".
Employment opportunities abound and are diverse.
I've always lived by the sea and half of my life was spent where beaches are miles long. The much smaller coved beaches of STT/STJ are very different from the beaches on STX and to me are idyllic in comparison.

Depending on your needs STT may have more varied work opportunities and although I realize the rents may be less on STX for more house the income possibilities in STT may negate the real differences.
I have lived on STT for 40 yrs. and been happy with the choice of island but am sure you would find either island to be a good place to live - the proximity to so many close by sailing destinations was the deciding factor for me.
so, basically what people are telling you -the island they live on is the better island. can you do a pmv to stx?
We are all proud of our home,

That's not what's been expressed at all.
"the proximity to so many close by sailing destinations was the deciding factor for me."
This doesn't make STT the 'better island' - only that is is better for me.
Please don't kill me for asking and I am sure it's a simple answer....what is a pmv?
I sort of agree in the sense that I LOVE STT's mountainous terrain, and everytime I have visited I have really enjoyed the fast paced/party environment that the island has to offer. I am just worried that I will move there and the enjoyment will wear off after a month or so and then I would be stuck. I have gotten an enormous amount of advice over the past few weeks and I think if I can get enough money by January I will make the move.
PMV = Pre move visit.
There's always something to do on STT or not, if that's your choice.
Might be easier to find jobs here as another poster noted.
STX is a much lager island and travel distances are greater than on STT. But .... they have actual highways.
Whichever island you decide to settle on, where you work may dictate where you wish to rent, so if sharing a car it's something to consider as relying on public transportation is not practical.

Funny dat and only because it speaks to the diversity of such a small island which I mentioned earlier. That fast-paced party environment is there if you want to partake of it and I too enjoyed it when I was younger - but it's way removed from my current lifestyle yet only 10-15 minutes away if I feel the urge! 😀
Aren't there less expensive options for a fast paced party atmosphere? I dunno. I came here to slow life down

Ha! Don't get too excited about our "highway". Rough and potholes, although not as deep as most other roads. Every time I drive it my truck gets pinged by something. Hubby said it's because I am driving faster (55 mph...woohoo), and the pebbles that get stuck in the tires come flying out and hit the truck.
55 mph! Ha!
I'm lucky if I get out of 2nd gear!
well OT you are entitled to your opinion. my opinion is that people who live on stt recommend it above stx and those who live on stx recommend it above stt
Speee1dy, opinions were asked for and opinions were offered but those opinions in no way expressed that one is overall better than the other.
Your own response to the post was, "i like stx for the seemingly slower pace" and I'm sure you could manage something more detailed if you had any knowledge at all of St Thomas which would help explain the differences between the two.
other than that, what i said was that stt residents prefer stt and stx residents prefer stx.
but continue to argue if you must

I'll only argue (which I've not been doing) by saying that that's not what you said, which was, " ... people who live on stt recommend it above stx and those who live on stx recommend it above stt". That's a big leap from what you're now saying which of course is the case as it's all to do with preference and for a myriad of reasons. The two islands are quite different from each other as many contributors have tried to explain. One can only opine on something which one knows something about and an opinion isn't by definition a recommendation.
omg, not word for word is it the same but the gist is the same. good god enough
Didn't mean to start a war!
I figured people are going to prefer the island they reside on over the others, I just simply want facts about each one so I can make a decent informed decision and weigh my options about each one. 🙂
Come visit sister in law in STT.
Plan a visit/trip to STX for a week to 10 days, rent a car and explore
to see what what and which island floats your boat.
Added expense, yes, but it's the only way to decide.
