STT - a short list of places that do short term rentals. Pros and cons of the listed places please
So below is a short list I complied for short term lodging. I want to stay somewhere for a month or two while looking for the perfect place. I was able to find 4 places. But I don't really know which are better than the others and the pros and cons of the various places. Can anyone help out?
Or if you know of other places that may be better post here or PM me.
Here is the list:
Magens Point Resort
http://www.magenspoint.com/
Point Pleasant Resort
http://www.pointpleasantresort.com
Sapphire Village
http://www.sapphirevillage.com/rental.htm
Pineapple Village
http://www.pineapplevillas.com/
I think this is the hardest part of gettin on the island, that first week or first couple days in finding something close enuf to work for you just long enuf. Im interested to hear some responses myself.
If you're willing to go as far east as Point Pleasant and Sapphire Village, look up Two Sandals by the Sea. It's cheap and a lot of people have said great things about it. Problem is they don't have a lot of room so they fill up - You'd probably need to be talking to them now to land a room in September or October.
Villa Olga in Frenchtown does monthly rates-- maybe since it is Sept and things are really slow you could ask Ronnie at Crystal Palace for a monthly rate OR - search some vrbo studio, one bedrooms and make a monthly offer - maybe Villa Blanca which is close to RLS would be a good option - or try all the guest houses like Green Iguana or Galleon House - Mafolie Hotel has done some monthly rates in the past.
"I don't understand why such a high percentage of people on this board always see the glass half empty instead of half full. Definitely not everyone but a much higher percentage of posters then in other forums that I frequent."
I have to admit after I read this comment from you on another post I was reluctant to offer any more suggestions.
Green Iguana was the first place I stayed at on island. Nice place, Nice owners, and I think they will do a monthly rate. It would be really convenient for you too, pretty much at the foot of Mafolie Rd. It's right above town though, I heard plenty of gunshots in the month I stayed. Didn't feel unsafe or anything, just not the greatest location.
This one (in town) on craigslist might suit and is a pretty good deal at $525/week which includes everything:

Keep an eye on CL as there are some legitimate regular short-term rentals which show up there when available.
Only $2100 a month to stay at the bottom of Bunker Hill (or as a friend that lives there calls it, "Baghdad" ) in an ancient building with lovely barbed wire accents to complement the iron bars? Does that mean you get to keep the bullet-proof vest they issue you when you check in?
Chanel: Point Pleasant, Sapphire Village and Pineapple Village are all on the safari line. Sapphire Village has a large population of health care travelers.

Oh please! $75 a night is a good all inclusive rate compared to the more tourist-related places the OP is looking at and, if you even bothered to take a look at the ad and had any idea of the location and spoke more from experience than what you garner from scuttlebutt and the general denigration of "town" as an option, your response might have been rather more sensible. I'm sorry I bothered.
IMHO anywhere in town may be great for a nurse, you'll get to know some of your potential patients/families and get a great intro to the culture. It may be a valuable short stay location.
Truly amazing the 'advice' people offer about your choices. Oh well. On the classified section of this site you will see Sunset Gardens continuously advertising rooms by the day week or month. This should fit your bill. When I was in the game of monthly rentals I can guarentee you it's not an easy task. I do from time to time do monthly during the slow months of summer.
Thanks everyone. You guys provided a ton of helpful info I will have to sift through one. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Are you kidding. $525 @ wk? $2100 @ month? In town? On that block? And what the heck is an "original style pizzaria oven"? Parking? I'd hate see your idea of bad deal.....
Is the land lord a friend of yours or something?

No, I do not know the property owner/landlord. Maybe if you ask poster Ronnie (President of the STT Historical Trust) nicely he will explain to you what the old Danish brick ovens are and where they can still be seen today. You might also be interested in joining one of the Trust's guided tours which will lead you through town and might dispel your notion of "in town" and "that block" being the seething den of iniquity you seem to think it is. The price of $75/night for a fully furnished 1BR unit which includes all utilities, cable,A/C, WiFi, etc. is extremely reasonable for a short term rental and the OP is certainly old enough to take a look at it if she wishes and see if it would be suitable for her until she gets settled and finds something permanent. Too bad that Ronnie doesn't have his Villa Fairview any more as it was the first resting place of hundreds of newbies finding their way around here. No doubt you would have trashed that too because of it's seedy location!
Old brick pizza ovens make the best pizzas and breads. Very hard to come by. Nice touch in an apt if you enjoy historical treasures/touches to your apt.
OH boy a wood-fired oven! Just the feature everybody desires in the tropics. Is there one of those donkey-driven wheel things out back to pump up the water from the cistern?
For the record I'm a big fan of the historic buildings, I just think the recommendation at $2,100 per month is ridiculous.
Ignorance must be sheer bliss.
I know exactly where that property is, I drive by it every single day on my way to work and on my way home. I have only ever posted on this board from experience, I don't believe 50% of what I hear. My company put me up in a hotel at the top of Bunker Hill for a couple months - I heard what goes on at night. I wasn't always great about having dinner ready when I left work late so I had to walk down to get food from the trucks on the waterfront on many occasions. As I posted in a different thread, one of my friends lived on Bunker Hill for a year. The guy grew up in South Philly - he wasn't some milquetoast suburbanite pantywaist that was afraid of his own shadow. After a few assaults including being sliced up by two teens with razor blades and having his pockets emptied and his shades snatched off his face he finally left because another friend of ours forced him to live with them for free.
Your advice is right on target 99% of the time but I can not for the life of me see how you'd recommend a newbie to STT live on Bunker Hill. And for $2100/mo? Completely Insane.

I am compiling a list of all the responses and how much the property quoted and if it includes electricity or not. Right now I have 9 properties on that list and only 3 have responded to me so far. Once the rest have responded I'll post the information here as a reference. Below are the 9 properties that were recommended from various people on different threads and a couple from a nursing thread in a different forum. I'll post the rates once I hear back.
Magens Point Resort
Point Pleasant Resort
Sapphire Village
Pineapple Village
Two Sandals By the Sea Inn
Villa Olga in Frenchtown
Galleon House
Mafolie Hotel
Green Iguana
Out of those options the best I see are Mafolie Hotel and Green Iguana. They should both do monthly rates and are not a hike from the hospital, Mafolie Hotel has an excellent bar and restaurant on property plus a pool. If you're staying there they give you half off entrees at the restaurant (which is expensive) but it'll get you a chicken caesar salad for $7.50 that is not bad at all. The people that work the pool bar and grill are some of the funnest people on island, get to know them and your stay will be a lot of fun.
I think she also needs to find out about parking if she's going to be renting a car. Parking in town is often a problem.
Ignorance must be sheer bliss.
Something you've proven time and time again.
You should check out Miller Manor. It is centrally located in Charlotte Amalie and everything is within walking distance. Until you learn the lay of the land and the safari route you need to be in town. It is gated and they offer weekly or monthly rates. They also have a place you can do your laundry on site.

CC: You might not get responses from some of those places because they don't do rentals by the month. For example, Sapphire Village doesn't do rentals, but their individual owners may.

I have a nice long list. Every time someone posts here I add it to the list. Just waiting for 2 more to respond and then I'll post the list.
FYI I don't really care about being in town as that is not where I will be living when I find a place. I actually prefer to be closer to where I plan to stay permanently which will probably be the north. I would NEVER go without transport so I'll be renting a car for 2 or 3 days before my car arrives from Puerto Rico. It is only 47 miles and I was told the maximum amount of time with clearing customs would be 3 days.
Since I will have a car I really can stay anywhere. Thanks for everyone's help and advice.
