STIMULUS CHECKS - how many VI residents have received theirs?
hello fellow VI residents!
I'm wondering if folks are getting their stimulus (gw bush) checks by now? Two co-workers have gotten them but I'm wondering how many residents in the VI have gotten theirs already? (since I haven't gotten mine yet:-(
Also check out this entertaining site where people post info on how they've spent their checks: http://www.howispentmystimulus.com
Sorry - not in the VI yet BUT one thing I did learn recently was that if you had any money taken out of your refund this year (such as the cost of the filing or preparation) then you are getting a paper check instead of direct deposit so that takes longer and they are still issuing the paper checks.
Here's the link to the schedule of when you should get your check based on the last two digits of your SS #
http://www.irs.gov/irs/article/0,,id=180250,00.html
Also helpful is the following site where you can track your check - you'll need your SS #, filing status & amount of the refund your received this year:

Hey goal, thanks for the info....but those websites and schedules pertain to the US (Internal Revenue Service), not the VI (Internal Revenue BUREAU).
My ss# ends in 07 and I have NOT gotten my check yet, even though the schedule on the web link above tells me I should have received my check by May 2....but some of my co-workers have gotten theirs, and they are VI residents receiving their checks from the VI govt. (and we are all fulltime VI residents)
I'd be interested to hear how many VI residents have received their stimulus checks from the IRB.
thanks all!
Joan
My SS number ends in 07 also & I haven't gotten mine either so don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I know others who have with higher ending SS numbers so I agree, that doesn't seem to make a difference. I never pay my taxes until the 14th or 15th so maybe those who filed earlier get theirs earlier???
I though the stimulas checks were suppose to be rebates of taxes paid previously? If so the VI government would have to agree to issue like checks to it's citizens. Since that is where the tax buck stops, right?
I am very surprised that the VI government is willing to give any back.
Daughter received hers today. She is a VI resident. Don't know what her social ends with.
hey Trade, yeah, I filed around the 14th or 15th too, and I do think people who filed early are getting theirs sooner.
Heepajeep: these are not rebates of taxes paid previously; these are the stimulus checks that GW Bush hatched as a plan to stimulate the economy in the US, and the way it's structured in the VI is that the feds sent the money to the IRB (local Internal Revenue Bureau) and then the IRB cuts the checks to the VI residents. So the $$ is already here but instead of getting the checks from the IRS (stateside) we get them from the IRB (locally in the VI)
Dougtamjj: hey, glad to hear someone's gotten theirs already! Hope my check's in the mail, too!
Thanks islandjoan,
But where did that money come from? taxes thats where. Taxes paid to the federal government which gets none from islanders?.
Secretary at my office received hers. I haven't received mine yet. At least some are receiving them so it must mean that mine is on the way.
Yes, that's true, our Federal dollars we pay INTO the IRB actually stay on island...the Stimulus checks are coming from the Federal Gov't, so they cut a check to the VIIIRB and the IRB is distributing them accordingly....Thanks, Feds!
I did get one from the IRS, I need to send that back though. I filed a part year return to the IRS, so they automatically issued the stimulus check a week after my US refund was issued. As long as I send it back by the end of the year, no penalty. But I am still waiting on my VI check, when I get that, I will send the other one back. For now, I will collect interest on their money for a change!
So once I start working in the USVI I'll file with the IRB not the IRS?
If you have any income in the U.S., you need to file a part year resident return with the IRS, then another return with the territory. The IRS has not made it a policy of penalizing people who file the entire year in the VI after having income in the U.S., but they can.
So if I move to VI in July, what I've earned here the first part of the year is filed with the IRS and the other half with the IRB? And the next year since I'll have no US income just VI I'll just file with the IRB?
Correct. Dealing with the IRB is no picnic but years ago I had a mess with Philadelphia IRS & that was MUCH worse than here.
We got ours here in AZ today.*-)
