Stimulus checks
Curious....anyone receive their checks?Supposedly VI govt. mailed out 4-8,000 3-4 weeks ago...still have not received ours!Filed our 2018 taxes last year.
I have seen some people I know get the $1200 check in the mail -- not me yet .
Don't know anyone who has received the extra $600 unemployment assistance.
Both have been working on the mainland for a while. My kids each got $1,200 and my brother in-law has been getting the extra $600 on his unemployment. He's a landscaper (seasonal work) and doesn't have any desire to go back to work as he's 61 and makes the same amount sitting at home (actually, on the beach), he's currently collecting almost $800 a week.....doesn't seem right to me. There's lots of work so that's not the issue, the grass grows even in a pandemic.
I just got my stimulus check on Friday.
The stimulus check was waiting for me in my mailbox on Thursday.
Last week we received a letter stating we’re getting a stimulus check. Couldn’t understand why they bothered to do that. Just mail us the check!
I wouldn’t mention this if the local government wasn’t on the verge of bankruptcy. Surely I’m not the only person to receive a letter, stating I’m getting another letter.
These funds are FEDERAL FUNDS.
We received our check just over a week ago. Then got a letter a few days later stating we were getting a check. I too had the same thought, what a huge waste of time, energy, and money sending the letters stating we were getting a check. The letters should only go out to people who were NOT getting a check explaining why they weren't. It is going to take them two months to get them all out at the rate they are going of $10 million per week.
The mailbox letters were sent to everyone in the US, not just the Virgin Islands. Mainland letters came from the IRS and included DJT's signature.

Our check was forwarded by the USPS and arrived in Big America two days ago. I really didn't think we would get it. Oh ye of little faith. ?
Our letter said we’d receive our check May 29th. Checked the PO Box today, still wasn’t there. Called the STX Phone number on the letter and they said if it’s not there by Friday, call them back.
@jaldeborghits only until the beginning of august he will collect that extra 600 a week

The extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits will expire after July 31, if the Senate doesn’t pass the $3 trillion HEROES Act – another emergency stimulus package that would extend the additional $600 benefit into January 2021.

I am sure a lot of people will milk that cash cow till the very end.
i am concerned what we going to do when the bills come due. Where we going to find HEROES with deep pockets?
For now we just printing trillions but in a long run we are diluting the value of USD.
Given the May employment numbers the odds of another massive stimulus package is likely greatly reduced.

Those SBA PPP loans provided incentive for small businesses to bring back furloughed employees. We'll see what happens with employment statistics next month when the eight weeks employee retention rule ends and loan forgiveness begins.
The employment narrative is being actively maneuvered to stop the HEROES Act and fuel the stock market. But I do hope May labor stats are not an anomaly.
Nonetheless, what's a few trillion dollars more for the HEROES Act that might actually help people. The US had accumulated more structural debt since DJT took office than ever in US history even before the pandemic.
Now, about the $600 per week. For those who have a family and have lost employer supported benefits most are going to pay in excess of $1000/month additionally for health care insurance and to replace other employer sponsored benefits such as employer contributions to their retirement. I would say $600/week is actuarily sound to keep a family "whole."
But I live in FL where unemployment, if you can get it, pays a whopping $275 per week. And the assumption is poor people can access social benefits, which have been highly reduced as well after years of politically-motived, punitive social policies.

right. That’s the part no one seems worried about. That bill will come due.

If you advocate for Republicans then you have to be comfortable with enormous structural budget deficits and the use of faulty economic logic that has sunk the US into recessions over and over again.
Who cares whether families are struggling through no fault of there own - but poor/needy is synonymous with black now and we don't want to help THEM. Gonna milk that system on $600 extra dollars a week. It's all very coded but message is clear.
So you care more about the valuation of the US dollar than helping people during the WORST CRISIS IN MOST OF OUR LIFETIMES? SMFH
The middle of a pandemic is not the time to be worried about running up the tab.
Anyway, the Democrats will fix it soon come as they have for the past century.
No checks yet - as my daughter says - this PO Box Is filled with AIR mail.
SMH...
The most recent Unemployment numbers have dropped by 13%. The S&P 500 broke 3200 on Friday. England has a vaccine already in mass production.
Mom. It might be a good idea to start preparing yourself now, for the re-election of our current POTUS.

Unemployment fell from 14.7% to 13.3% between from April report to May report. That's a drop of 1.4%. The PPP loans were an incentive for small businesses to keep their employees on payroll rather than push them onto unemployment insurance until they could get back to work. So that part of the CARE act achieved what it needed to do - to stabilize (manipulate?) the stock market that's so influenced by the jobs report.
S&P low was 2475 since a stat is only relevant with a comparison.
I figured the vaccine would be the October surprise.
Old farts have limited futures to worry about so they are inclined to vote their bank accounts.
DJT will not be re-elected if young people vote. We'll see.
DJT, hard core Democrats hate him, traditional Republicans hate him, yet somehow he's our President. To me that's very telling about both DJT and the electorate. It's kind of like, at age 68 and having never run for political office, he got up one morning and said, gee, I think I'll run for the Presidency. Everyone (I mean everyone with a media platform) laughed at him, everyone scorned him, everyone outspent him, 4 out of the 5 networks (ABC, NBC/MSNBC, CNN, CBS) dedicated themselves to defeating him (FOX didn't know what to do until after the convention, even then they were still a little confused) and yet he beat back 16 traditional Republican contenders to capture the nomination and went on the defeat the full force of the Democrat machine, coming off the what was, we were told by the media, a successful Obama Presidency. One thing is for sure, almost everyone has continually underestimated DJT, over and over and over again. I wouldn't bet any of my money against DJT winning. The other thing that's odd to me is no one is talking about Joe Biden, they're only talking about beating DJT (bad orange man!) because they hate him, in other words it looks like the motivation is, we're running away from DJT, not, we're running to Joe Biden, the way they ran to Barack Obama (and to a lesser degree Hilary Clinton). It feels like the Democrat strategy is: If you hate DJT, vote for Joe Biden. Yes, I do appreciate there's something of a soft spot on STX for Joe Biden, kind of a "local" guy.

DJT positioned himself as an outsider, which of course he's not, but the disenfranchised old white guys ran to that. Better than a woman (lock her up) or a black man (birther BS). Racism and sexism proved potent attractors to guys who want the world as it used to be. Those successful Obama years were a bitter time for the white male power crowd.
DJT knows his market and in 2016 he knew what played on TV to that demographic. And marketing his name is what he does best. He even turned old white people on to Twitter! Short messages - simple slogan-like language - perfect for Trump and his base.
DNC lost the last election because of the Clinton campaign's refusal to believe they needed to campaign in the swing states. Spent way too much time and money campaigning to those who already were positioned to vote for the Dems. DJT may make that same mistake in 2020 because the dude really wants to be popular. He's also surrounded himself with "yes" people which was a huge mistake made by H Clinton.
I think Biden is sitting back letting Trump prove himself to be unelectable. And I do think, for the first time, Trump is making communication errors he wouldn't have made even a year ago. Showing compassion for the suffering of others is not an attribute he or other sociopaths possess. Oh and there is that attempt to weaponize the active military against American citizens on American soil … not sure how that will play in Peoria.
Biden is going to have to get out of the basement soon.
And young people are going to have to vote in record numbers.
Since real people who live real lives in the US Virgin Islands cannot vote for the president should this continuing political discussion just be moved to a relevant forum???
