stateside sales tax
Someone told me that if I go to the states and show my VI license I don't have to pay sales tax. This sounds too good to be true, but then I was thinking that I think this is true for the US states that don't pay sales tax (ex: Oregon residents don't have to pay sales tax in California). Can anyone confirm or deny this?
As a Californian who lives and resides and who pays lots of different California tax, I must say that an Oregonian flashing a Oregon drivers license in any store and asking to be exempt, would be laughed out of the store and maybe even the state. If you're here, you'll pay it.
The taxes you pay are based on the locale in which you are in when you buy it...if the State has a Sales Tax, you will be required to pay it...unless you have a Tax Exempt I.D. from your business for buying wholesale..
It worked when I lived in Seattle for a few months. Maybe they allow non-Washington residents to be exempt and other states don't? Because when I went to school in Rhode Island, I never heard of any non-RI residents doing that.
When we bought our boat in Florida, we didn't have to pay tax because we were leaving the country on it within 30 days. (or some specified time period)
Also, I think, if you are not taking delivery of the product, but having it mailed to the VI, you might be exempt, like when ordering online. But, if you just go into a store, buy a product and walk out of the store with it, you have to pay.
Some of the big department stores in Miami allow you to register and get a sales tax exempt card; it's good for the day.
i thought it sounded too good to be true. thanks for the info!
