State tax?!?
So I got my first paycheck and noticed a deduction labled "VI Tax" that weighs in at around 12%.
Whats the deal, is this some kind of bloated equivilant of a state tax? I thought my taxes were high in California at 9% (for state only) but this is a joke. If I change my filing status will it effect this percentage or is this a flat-fixed type tax???
I'm looking at my pay stub as I type -- FIT (federal income tax), Medicare, Social Security -- That's it.
I suggest you speak to your employer.
Hello Count,
Ask your accounting dept.. or whoever writes the checks what that is. Let us know what the explanation is.
Federal income tax, Medicare, Social Security is what it should be. Insurance deductions if applicable. Were there any other deductions or just that one?

Ok, this is what happened.
I was being charged Federal income tax, and local tax when I should have just been charged local tax according to accounting. Its fixed now and my tax should be normal after this...
Hello Count,
Glad its fixed... however what does your accouting dept. consider "local tax"?

Hey Islander
According to payroll at my work (Home Depot) we aren't supposed to pay federal income tax, we instead pay a similar sized tax to the local VI government and its marked on our checks as "VI Tax". My problem was that I was being charged for that and the federal tax and it put my deductions way outa the normal range... at least it was fixed quick though!
Now I'm paying just the normal stuff: SSI, medicare, and income (to VI)...
Thanks Count...
That is what I quessed but wanted to make sure. The tax is income tax the same as federal income tax but it stays in the Virgin Islands.
Again glad you caught it and got it fixed.
