Starting Daysail Business
My boyfriend and I wish to start a daysailing business either on St. Thomas or St. John. He has his Captain's license and we own our own catamaran. What would be the best way to get started in this business. Do we need to apply for any permits or licenses?
I am in the process now of starting a charter business in STT. So I can answer all your questions.
First... daysail high capacity catamarans are everywhere. You would have to find a niche for yourself like limit the trip to 6 people, and providing personalized luxury services.
Second what kind of license does your husband have. In order to go to International he will have to have a masters license, and an STCW. If he has an OUPV license you must stay domestic.
You will need to form a corporation, and sell the boat to it. a corp is a necessity to protect yourself.
There is a charter League (Virgin Island Charteryacht League) that is involved with the promotion of the charter boat industry in the Virgin islands. Membership is an absolute necesity for promotion of your business. They offer substancial discounts on insurance, and local businesses involved in the charter industry.
You will need to secure advertising in the local travel publications (What To Do St Thomas, and St Thomas This Week), produce a website, flyers, business cards etc. A profesionally produced logo and website are important.
A boat slip generally runs about .75 cents per foot per day on a monthly basis plus electricity and water.
You will have to purchase boat toys like snorkel equipment etc.
You will have to apply for a business lisence, and if you plan to go to St John a park permit for commercial vessels.
You need a CC merchant account, office space if you cant work out of the boat. You will need to get the boat there either transport, or sail her there.
You can drop me an e-mail if you would like.
