Starting a Business-STX
What all is entailed in getting a business started on STX? What costs are there involved with the gov't? What are the dos's & dont's? What little surprises lie ahead?
Thanks!
look into EDC (Economic Devolopment Commision)
Oh...I'm looking for info/experiences on starting a small biz...one employee:me.
Oh! Lol. Not sure about that then.
You must file the business name to see if it is available. Business License., fire inspection, probably a lot more but these come to mind now.
yes...the name has been filed, and it's all mine!
I'll be working/producing out of my kitchen. Any experiences with the DOH that can be shared?
You'll need to get a business license and if your business involves cooking (which I assume it does) you'll need to be inspected by the DOH and comply with the numerous related laws (plus of course get a food handler's card). If this is your home kitchen you need to make sure the property is zoned for business. DLCA can probably give you a lot of the information you need and/or you might consider using the services of a business consultant/expediter as I always found the expense well worth it. Good luck!
Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) often has great workshops and you may want to check into any help they may be able to offer.
Here's an older link but will give you an idea of what they may offer. I have attended some seminars they have sponsored and found them well worthwhile.
Also if you are starting a business, do not co-mingle your private and business money. Pay yourself a salary. Keep expenses separate.
Keep things separate and speak with an accountant or have someone do your taxes plus you may want to get a business license as a LLC (Limited Liability Corp).
Make a list: do you need special supplies or products? What is your cost of doing business, electricity, advertising, business cards, cost of supplies, delivery, fuel, ect. - just to name a few. Do you need a website created? How is the public going to become aware of the services you offer? How much time and effort can you put into it on your own? What is your start-up budget? All good things to know.
Good Luck and let us know how tings dem go!
Thanks OldTart, that's the kind of info I was looking for. I saw the basics on DLCA website, but they don't have any posted fees. Does the fee depend on the day that I apply??? Why does our govt keep so many things a mystery...........
The last time I checked, DLCA had prices for all the licenses they issue. They may not, however, have a category that matches the description of the business you want to start. That's why it's usually good to hire an expediter as suggested so they can advise as to which category most matches your business.
The DLCA site is very clear and thorough, IMO.

Nothing to do with the day of the week or the month or the year - purely dependent upon the type of license you're applying for as there are different fees for different licenses and of course some licenses require a written exam to be taken. I'd first check with DLCA about exactly what license you're required to have - go down there personally and chat with them.

Very informative! You hit all the points on the head that i wanted to post. Just to reiterate: DON'T mix business & personal money! Make sure ALL your bases are covered when tax time comes, don't want to be caught up with the law because you forgot or didn't know.
Don't forget that your business license application also gets routed through DPNR to determine if the business is permissible under the zoning laws.
