Standing on the precipice

Hi everyone! I am new to this message board and really need to hear some feed back. I am moving to STT the second week of May.
This is my second attempt at island life on my own, moved to Grand Cayman in September, 4 days before Ivan hit. I've lived on Antigua for several years when I was still married but actually I've never lived anywhere totally on my own. I am actively seeking employment in either the retail or restaurant industries. I'v been in management but I'm open to anything that will enable me to feed myself. One of my biggest concerns is not fitting in or getting employment because of my age, I just turned 50. I need to work and I'd like to make friends, so how is it there? I found Cayman to be fairly youth focused. I'm scared!!!

Lou- As you might have noticed from this message board STT is cliquey just like any where else, and yes, people here gravitate to the young. You sound young at heart and if 40 is the new 30 then 50 must be the new 40. You'll be fine here, keep in touch and we'll have a coffee and chat when you arrive. skino

Lou,

You're not alone on that precipice, I'm right there with you. The only difference is I'm arriving in late September.

Would you mind keeping in touch? My good thoughts are with you!

Please let me know how you are doing.

Thanks & MAintain the Ol' optimism - it helps.

Kindest regards,
Phoenix

Phoenix, Think I read your first posting and thought..."hmmm, kinda sounds like me except for the employment background". Sure I'll stay in touch, when you get here we can mix up one of those frozen umbrella things the islands are famous for and then share the low down on the "low" down here! Lou

Hello Lou,

Welcome to the board.

I have found that the wait staff at restaurants in St. Thomas are usually young people, early 20s-30s. Not always but most. The bartenders, management not necessarily always the young crowd though. There are lots of stores and the employees are usually a range of people/ages so I think retail might be your better bet. But definately check out both options.

I noticed a job on the Ritz Carlton Resort employment page for a management position - Assistant Director in Food & Beverage. And a few other openings. Here's the link https://www.ritzcarlton.com/corporate/employment/search.asp?postype=-1&dept=-1&posName=-1&rg=11&sreg=38&location=-1&Search.x=48&Search.y=7

St. Thomas' bar scene is usually a younger crowd, but if you get involved in other activities you can meet people. If you want to network with business people you can attend the Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours. If you like Arts you can attend some of the gallery showings. If you like Theatre and are an actor you could try out for plays at Pistarckle Theatre. You will have to seek out ways of meeting people.

Hi Lou,

My husband and I will be arriving in August, and we are 50 and 51. We too are concerned about finding jobs, but are thinking positive and are looking at this move as the next adventure in our hopeully long lives. And I agree 50 is the new 40.

Islander and august1- Thanks for the feedback! My mantra is "Everything is fine" I will check out
Ritz-Carlton, greatly appreciate that lead. August1 I just have to convince my rapidly diminishing estrogen level that 50 is 40!!!

As owner of Villa Fairview, I can tell you that I have twice as many young folk as I do older ones. The older ones get jobs equally as well. They probably bag more money though and pay rent on time as they don't go out partying every night like the younger ones!
