St. Thomas
I am considering relocating to St. Thomas, and I have a few questions: Are there a lot of racial tensions on the island? Are government services and the bureaucracy as dysfunctional as some say? How bad is the crime problem on St. Thomas? Does one need a car on the island? Thanks in advance for your advice.
You can find answers to all these questions without lumping them all together in one post, by checking extensive posts on all these subjects. Here are the short anwers.
No, not racial tensions on the islands.
Government works as it does in many places - not always the most efficient for all the people all the time.
Crime is dealt with.
Yes you need a car.
Please come and give us a visit if you are so inclined, living here is a choice many of us have made.
Thanks for your answer, I wasn't able to find a solid answer to those questions doing searches. One other question, every address in St. Thomas seems to refer to an estate? Is that like the equivalent of a neighborhood? Is there a map showing geographically where they are?
Considering: You can find maps with the estates drawn in, but they won't do much good. You really, really need to see for yourself. I know someone who has a physical address of Lindbergh Bay. Now, that area goes from the airport (by the water) all the way up a mountain- very different neighborhoods. The estate names are a holdover from the old days, and are quite quaint.
For background, you should spend some time reading the online newspapers- www.onepaper.com and www.virginislandsdailynews.com. But before you decide to move, you should make a longish visit with an eye toward some of your concerns.
