St. Thomas
Myself and one (or more) of my friends have interests in moving to Saint Thomas. We thought it would be a good idea to go in the start of the summer, May, because of the cheaper rates for lodging and flights, and work that summer and if we like it and think we can make a life there, stay. I have looked online for cheap apartments and found ones for around 550-600 as the lowest. We would love to work on the beach as drink boys but any work would be acceptable. Any thoughts and opinions? We have some college education and are young men, but looking for adventure and something different than the American conformist lifestyle.
Any information and/or comments are greatly appreciated.
The reason everything is cheaper is that summer is low or slow season. That means that, although apartments are less expensive, jobs are scarcer. Many restaurants run shorter hours. Resorts may lay off people. Locals use the summer months to go on vacation (where do people who live in paradise GO on vacation?)
I live on St. Croix and have vacationed on St. John, so I don't know anything about St. Thomas, but I've never seen a "drink boy" anywhere.
But hey, your young and what the hell, take a chance. It will certainly be an adventure.
Jeff - definately look into it more. As Linda mentioned waiters on the beach is not the norm.... Magens Bay on St. Thomas and Coki have folks that walk up and down the beach for cocktail orders. Other beaches related to resorts have beach bars where the bartender is there so you walk up and get drinks. There are other jobs you could look into that are related. As Linda mentioned summer is the winding down of season... things start to get slow partiularly getting into Aug- Sept... some restaurants and stores actually close for a couple weeks at a time - while owners and staff take vacations. Not saying you could not find work just harder... so there is a good and bad - easier for apartments harder for job.... but not impossiable you will just have to look at more options to find something. Read through post on this board - might get questions answered and comments you didnt think about. If you are young and unattached and can come down and try and make things work then do your research and try it... if it doesn't work out you can look into something else and be happy for the experience and if it works out - then its wonderful! Do your homework and ask questions so you are prepared.
