st. thomas vs. st. croix

Hello,
I am very excited to be relocating to the Virgin Islands in the next couple of months. Initially, I was set on St. Croix and have a job opportunity there. Based on research online and talking to different people who have visited the V.I., St. Croix sounded like a mixture of great aspects of all the islands. However, I have recently been offered an excellent job opportunity in St. Thomas. Now I'm torn b/c i really don't know which island would be a better fit for me.
My husband and I are very laid back and don't like the crowded scene. We love outdoor activities (i.e. scuba diving, beach, hiking, etc) and will have a small boat (17-21ft Whaler). Any advice, opinions, and/or or input on pros and cons of each or both islands would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much 🙂

You'd be better off doing a pre-move visit to see which one you like better. Both are fine but are different & appeal to different people for different reasons.

Alexis,

You'll get more use out of your boat on St. Thomas. There just aren't that many places to go in a small boat, or even a large one, on St. Croix. From STT, you can hop over to St. John, all the smaller cays, even over to the BVI in a Whaler, if you don't mind a "fun" ride!

Having said....I've lived on both, and St. Croix, BY FAR, is my preference!!! It's all about you.

St Thomas is about one third the size of St Croix is one difference - be that positive or negative.
As mentioned you would likely spend a lot more time boating and exploring in STT waters.
The traffic congestion on STT can be frustrating depending on your route to work, errands, daily out and about.
The close proximity to STJ and the BVI from STT makes for easier daytrips.
The air connections seem more convenient from STT.
Any decision should include a PMV to both islands to see what ambiance fits for you.

STT has boating we have a lot more beaches (quiet beaches where you're by yourself) and dive sites.

Also cost of rentals and homes are higher in STT but in STT there are usually more job opportunities in the tourism/customer service industry.

If you're a experienced captain you can take your boat to STT, STJ or the BVI anyways. You have to cross 40 miles of open ocean though. Disclaimer: I know nothing about boats and don't know what your kind is. Just lucky to have friends that do this a couple times of year and take us along. 🙂

I've met my fair share of st thomians that come to stx and like it better, like Juanita. But I highly suggest you check out both, because they really are very different in lifestyle and what they offer.

You will have very few, if any!! days of the year when you would want to take a under 25' powerboat across 40+ NM from STX.

As Exit Zero says, "St Thomas is about one third the size of St Croix is one difference - be that positive or negative." ( I always thought it was half the size???) but it has about the same number of people. Then on cruise ship days (most days??) there are thousands more.
Much better shopping however.

STX is 87sq miles and STT is 35sq miles (if I remember right!).

that would make it 40% of the size with about the same number of people.

Haha, apparently not a "calendar" board.

Just kidding...sometimes the older threads are a good thing.
