I presently work for a hotel company here in the states that also has a hotel in St. Thomas. I have been considering transfering my employment and relocating there in the fall of 2003. I was wondering about how much a 1 bdrm. or studio apartment would go for in St. Thomas near Great Bay area. Are there apartment rental agencies in the area to contact to get info on this?
Also, Is it possible to get around without a car? How do people without cars get around? Walking? Bicycle? Motorcycle or Scooter? Any info would be helpful. Thanks

You can get decent 1 bdrm condos in the $1,000 range. There aren't many realtors that will be helpful unless you're in the market to buy something. But ask the folks at your new hotel; most will be happy to share their experience.

Most people have cars. But (if you're speaking of the hotel I thinking you are) there are a few condos within an easy walk. And people often take "dollar safaris," open-air taxis that travel the main roads and will take you along them for a buck. Others hitch rides. You sometimes see toursists on scooters, but I always wonder whether all of them make it back to the ship in one piece.

Good luck!

Michael, many of the questions you have can likely be answered in the Settlers Handbook (guide to life and moving to the USVI) you can order it from http://www.vitraders.com ... also read through the housing and island life section of the moving guide online - top of this page select moving guide and read through the sections they will help also.

Good Luck

Michael: If you are talking about the hotel that MsChuy and I think you are talking about, it is out at the end of the Nazareth peninsula. The safaris do not go out there- you would have to walk to the National Park road. They won't put you up on property? 😉 One of those nice new units??? Seriously, people do get around without cars, but it is not recommended!

East Ender and MsChuy, The Hotel I am speaking of is the Ritz-Carlton. A position opened up at the hotel in St. Thomas, and I was just trying to get some info from locals to see if it is even feasable for me to move there before I apply for a transfer. I will order the book because it seems helpful.

Thanks.

Yes, that is the hotel I suspected... I think that there are places within walking distance, but I'd still hold out for a spot on property ;-)... You would still need transportation to Red Hook, etc. Actually, you might not want to be TOO close to the shop...
