St. John vs St. Thomas

Hi All and thanks for the message board. I've been reading it since a move to the VI seems likely.
Here's my situation.
My boyfriends' company relocated to St.Thomas, and has an apartment in St.John for those who didn't relocate, but need to be on the Island from time to time. He is now basically commuting to and fro spending 1 week every month there. The company is now pushing for him to relocate permanently. I have visited once, but as a tourist, not as a potential resident. I will return in March to look at real estate, and to try to envision living there permanently.
With that in mind, what are your thoughts on the following:

St. Thomas or St. John for quality of life (I have a 13yr old boy).
What do kids that age do in the summer?
I am too young to retire, too old to learn a new trick (I've been in advertising since college).
If I do the lady who lunches, will I be in good company?
I am a sit on the beach person, and a diver, is this a tourist only past-time?
What would be a good relocation package "wish list"?

Sorry for the laundry list of questions, but the company line is all good, and from those who didn't make it all bad...need some objectivity.
Thanks again,
Sandi

Hello Sandi,

In reference to your questions - do you intend on sending your son to public or private school? What type of things does he enjoy doing, or might he enjoy taking up here??

You could find work in advertising or marketing - but you would have to likely be on island and network to find a good position.

No sitting on the beach and diving are not just tourist past-times - going to the beach, snorkeling, diving, saling, fishing are very much enjoyed by permanent residents.

Yes we pay/file Federal Income Tax. And Social Security and Medicare are removed from paychecks - yes.

All the best with your moving plans.

Islander,
Although my son is a product of public school education, he would have to attend private on the Island, since the public school lost it's accreditation. If we can find housing on St. John, I think I like the private school there. What is you opinion of that school. We can stay in the St. John company apt. for up to 6 months, but I would hate for him to change schools once we are there, (the real estate agent isn't hopeful on St.John housing).
As far as his activities..he is an outgoing kid, so making friends won't be a problem, and he goes with the flow, whatever the guys are playing, he will join in. I'm just concerned that with nothing much to do in the summer, he may get bored., especially if we move at the end of the school year, and he hasn't formed any bonds.
I'm thinking summer camp is a more continental U.S. thing--am I correct?
I agree with you that in my line of work, I will have to network once I'm there. It's a shame Gannett sold the daily newspaper, I could have simply transfered...(they recently bought the company I work for).
I'll be back in March, so if you have any suggestions for areas that I should look at, both good and bad..I would appreciate it.
Sandi

SandiDee: You might contact the Virgin Islands Daily News anyway, if you are a newspaper person (?) Also the on-line Source www.onepaper.com. Your options are greater in St Thomas. I don't personally know anything about the Coral Bay School on St John. Summer camps are definitely a VI thing- from watersports and eco-camps to arts, etc. Also it seems as though kids go to visit family im the States or down island in the summer to broaden their horizons! As Islander explained, we pay income tax on the federal schedule, but it all stays in the VI.

East Ender,
Thanks for the info...Although I am now in Direct Mail Advertising (junk mail), I was a newpaper person for 10 years...VI Daily News may be just the ticket. I have a call in to Gannett to see if they still have contacts there.
Yeah for summer camps...I'm sure my son wants to spend his 1st summer getting to know the Island, and what better way to meet friends.
If anyone has any info on how to reach these camps, please advise.
Thanks again!
Sandi
