st. croix
what part of the island is desireable to live on?
depends on your needs/wants. what one person finds desireable, another will find quite the opposite. what is your ideal?
i dont want to live in a bad neighborhood with a high crime rate, broken down cars in their yard, etc.
I too would like this information. I wouldn't want to live in an area where residents are on edge once night falls. Are there certain areas Hovensa employees tend to live?
Also, we bought a map with names on it like Sion Farm, Work and Rest, Williams Delight, Strawberry Hill, Friedensfeld...are these villages, neighborhoods, what?
Is there a place online to find out more about these neighborhoods/areas? We will find out next week whether we are moving or not, and it seems like the few offerings on the real estate sites are huge homes.
Can anyone list names of middle-road neighborhoods? I certainly don't want to do and live like a materialistic snob, but I don't want to fear for my kids safety. I think that's probably what most folks are looking for...just average.

Debbie,
My wife and I have lived here for a year and a half (Goodness time flys). Where you are comfortable on the island is up to you. If you are white (we are), most of the real estate agents will point you to either the east end of the island or to condo row. I personally don't like either one. The east end is too dry and is populated mostly by stateside transplants. Condo row looks like condo complexes anywhere. We live close to the north shore is a very mixed area. There are all types of people in our area. We love the diversity. You really need to come look for yourself.
Brand,
The names you saw were estate names. When the Danes had the island they divided it into estates. The names have stuck and identify a part of the island.
Ric, thank you very much for the input.
One other thing...how is it that one side of the island is dry and the other has botanical gardens? It just seems funny to me for some reason.

yes we are white but we dont want to live with only whites or only transplants.we like diversity as well.as with brandy i wouldn't want to be fearful.i dont have to worry about children yet she is only 8 months old.
Hello Brandy,
The east end of St. Croix is relatively flat in comparison to the north-west end, which is mountainous. Rain tends to fall more in the mountains keeping this area lush. On St. Croix its called "the Rainforest". The eastern end is flat, windy and has mostly short shrubs, cactus, grass.
I thought I remembered the correct explanation dealing with rain shadows, windard vs. leeward... 😛 but I am afraid I have forgotten more of my geography classes then I thought 🙁

Hello,
I would like to find out about the diverse safe areas in St. Croix that I should consider researching. I will be moving there in July. I think I will need to take another trip over. I have no idea whre to begin to look.
The names you are refering to are Estates. They use to be plantation and are now sub devisioned. We bought a lot on Little Princess which is near Christianstead. We bought in that area because we also are avid gardeners. Not all parts of the Island are good for gardening. I would make use of a realtor. They know the island. I guess it would also be good to know if you are planing to rent or buy a house, condo or apartment.
