Never been to St Croix, we are just thinking about STT. However a friend said St Croix might be better choice, he thought it would be a lot cheaper to live, looking at this site I see gas is a lot cheaper.. Jobs are not an issue with us, so are beaches, landscape etc.. just as nice as STT? Is the quality of life about the same? Any pro's and con's?
Thanks

This is one of those FAQ type questions! Each of the Virgin Islands is different from the next. Seems that people like each island for different reasons. If you are serious about moving, a long stay on the islands you are considering would be in order. How do you judge quality of life? For example, St Thomas has cruise ships that come into port frequently, often several at a time. It makes town busy and there is a lot of traffic. St Croix does not currently have cruise ships visiting. This could be good or bad, depending on your point of view. If you are a shop owner or taxi driver, you'll have one opinion. If you are a retired person looking for peace and quiet, you'll have a different view! What would you do with your time if you aren't working? That might lead you to one place or the other...

You have been given good advice by eastender. I live on st croix part of the year. I am very happy here. Because it is less crowded, has three golf courses, and has a sense of not being congested ( except at some shopping places). I would not like the cruise ship congestion found on St Thomas. However I have friends who love it and know ways of finding their own peace and quiet.

Do not make any decisions until you spend some time on each island. It is not a "alot" cheaper on St Croix. The rents are a little less and there is less competition for apartments but food and general purchases are about the same.

Hello,

As mentioned the two islands are quite different, very different in my opionion. As for the points you inquired about; beaches - I like those on St. Thomas better. Landscape I like that St. Croix offers a variation - there is dry, short bushes, grassy plains on the east end and then forested areas on the west end, cattle grazing land... its nice to have the variety.

What attracts you to St. Thomas? (This way we know what you are looking for, and can perhaps discuss whether St. Croix offers the same.)

Actually, wife and I love the warm weather and beaches anywhere, we go to the caribbean at least twice a year for vacation. This was our first time to St Thomas, out of all the vacation spots we have been to, Hawaii, G Cayman, Cozumel, St Marten, Costa Rica, For that matter Phucket Thailand, Bali etc.... We found what seems the best of both worlds on USVI, low housing costs (compared to other places), US territory ( no long term visa hassles), Short flight to mainland, Beautiful beaches.
We are fine on money so that is not a problem, we are both early 40's and our only kid is off to college in 1 year. Looking to semi retire, between us we have a law degree, Physical therapy degree and Business degree. Another nice thing is that being a US territory the most we would have to do is sit for local Boards to practice our trade.

ptjd,

It sounds that the island itself (beaches, scenery) is what appeals to you - so for the most part either island would do however what I would suggest is that you plan on a visit an go to both islands and see which one you like better; they are different so its worth investigating.
