We hope to be moving to STX in August and want to bring our motorcycles & ATV's with us. Does anyone know if you are required to register motorcycles (Both On & Off Road types) and ATV's (a.k.a four wheelers).

I just telephoned MVB and I talked to 2 different workers- neither had a clue. They did give my the Supervisor's name, but of course she was out off the office when I called!

I'd really appreciate any info... or perhaps someone could look up in the yellow pages
and post the mailing address for the Motor vehicle Bureau in STX.

Many Thanks in advance.

Hello Lauren,

I believe any vehicle that is going to used on the main roads here needs to be registered and this includes regular bicycles. Motorcycles I have called and asked about before and they do require registration. I have never seen an ATV here, saw them a lot on another island, in any case its likely the folks you spoke with at the DMV may never have heard of an ATV or seen one so don't know the legalities concerning it, however based on them requiring a bicycle to be registered I would quess your ATV would need it to. You might try and call DMV again, try in the morning to get in touch with the supervisor. Good Luck.

Here is a the address:
Patrick Sweeney Headquarters, R.R. 02 Kingshill, St. Croix 00850

Hi Islander,

Thanks for the info....
We did get in touch with the DMV supervisor- her name is Mrs. Benjamin, she was
very nice and tried to be helpful. She had heard of ATV's but had never seen one before and couldn't find any info on registration proceedure, etc.
She asked that we fax her a product brochure with a picture (we did today) and she
was going to try to find out what to do.

I've noticed that there are "sea-doo's" (wave runners/jet skis) for rent on STX-
I wonder if those must be registered. Here in the lake country region of Wisconsin where we live, they must be registered.

By the way, do you remember what island(s) you have seen an ATV on? I have noticed that motocycles aren't very common. In all the websites for the islands I have yet to see
anything motocycles or ATV's.

As we are in the midst of planning a move to STX (a family of 5) the wealth of information that I have gotten from this message board has been a Godsend!

Thanks Again!!!
Lauren

Hello Lauren,

Glad to hear that you got through to Mrs. Benjamin and that she is assisting to get the regulations for you. By the looks of things if you bring your ATV, yours may be the first!!

Wave runners in the VI; I looked in the information I have concerning motorboats. And I quote:

In addition to motorboats as required by this section, no person shall use or operate any vessel (vessel defined as any watercraft then can be used as transportation with the exception of seaplanes only) including sailboats, hobbiecats, dinghies, tenders, jet skis or cimilar contrivances on any of the waters of the Virgin Islands unless;

1. such vessel is registered with the Dept. Of Planning and Natural Resources and

2. an identifying number and decal is visibly displayed on the vessel and the operator can present a valid registration certificate. (exceptions to this latter rule is made for vessels documented by the Coast Guard)

Looks like its about $25 for a vessel under 16 ft.

I saw quite a few ATVs in St. Barts (but that was about 8 years ago, I've been more recently and saw very few and had heard there had been numerous terriable accidents and so a movement against them.

Motorcycles are not a common form of transportation here. And I have never seen an ATV on any of the USVI islands that I can recall; as I joked earlier yours may just be the first 🙂 A few folks have motorcycles and often a car as well. Drivers here aren't savvy about sharing the road with 2 wheeled vehicles, the roads are curvy, hilly, steep, we get brief tropical showers... so a car is your better bet.
