St. Croix is becoming a Caribbean culinary hot spot!
I saw that and wondered about the article since there's a slew of comments on the dining experiences in STX, most of which weren't highly flattering, including comments made about the place at Cane Bay that just reopened.
What say ye, STX?
It's nice that it's becoming more widely publicized but both locals and (more often) frequent visitors have been touting the island's culinary excellence for a few years now. A great banner for the big island to proudly display!
... there's a slew of comments on the dining experiences in STX, most of which weren't highly flattering ...
Comments where and about which restaurants (hopefully not the latest fried chicken outlet)? Reviews on the prime travel sites have been highly complimentary for some time.
Taste of St Croix/Wine Food Experience is big, of course. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned. Jury's still out on Dine VI, which is new, and features some really "meh" eateries. But, aside from that, I haven't talked to any visitors who say they came here for the food. The fact that they lead off with Cane Bay, is suspect, as is the statement from Tourism. (What else are they going to say?) I see this as a blog entry to increase page ranking. But anything that helps, publicity wise, is a good thing.
That said, there are surprisingly fabulous places to eat here. But that's not new. Zion rocks. I'm expecting great things from Balter. 40 Strand is decent. Living here, we don't eat out as much as we used to. So it's always a tough decision deciding where to go. There are always too many great places to choose from.

They don't go for the food but it's widely remarked upon in trip reports that the offerings are excellent and superior to that similarly offered on either STT or STJ. Just what I've read - no personal opinion as the last time I ate on STX was at the Top Hat many years ago!

Agree. As I said, the food here is surprisingly awesome. Our visitors rave about it. But the article was spotlighting STX as the new culinary destination. I'd love for that to happen. But that's a little premature.
Any sort of a boost is welcome, regardless of one's personal opinions. In fact for the past two years at least, some visitors have scheduled their time on STX around the Taste of STX event - it's all good!

I would say having worked as a chef in the past and being a major foodie that over all the culinary scene in STX in general has been for me a lot more enjoyable over all than STT. My wife ( who is in the supply biz) and I have had very few disappointing meals there and it seems as if the restaurants there are not in the same rut as here in STT.....
The food here is overall amazing. I consider myself a pretty big foodie. Half our trips are geared around foods. I cant wait for Spain, soon. STX food is better than STT and STJ thats for sure, although I do have a few favs on STT. More artisan here - more flavors - more local goodies too.
We went to Galangal last week 5 of us and dropped $500. Worth every penny. We did have some amazing wine that was not cheap but the food was just perfect. I had the duck - but everyone had a different dish and we all tasted each others food. Every single one - perfection. Their sauces and glazes and spices are on point every single time. That chef is SO talented! I always ask to pop my head in and say thanks.
Zion too; we had a guest lol, we never get to do both those in a week $$$. We had every single appetizer including the special ones. 6 total. I didn't even order dinner - just apps. The escargot was SO good second was the crispy pork belly in some delicious glaze. MAN it was good.
Today at the parade I tried more pates and finally found one that I think is better than the lady in STT at BMV. Sailfish and beef today. Her booth was Sweet Delights. I don't think she has a brick and mortar but I did ask for her card - #340-778-1855 in case someone wants it. She had some beautiful candy apples too but after a large cane juice - no more sugar for me today lol. Speaking of.. how good is that stuff? I dont want rum in mine - just straight up.
That beef pate was really really good. So many flavors in there and the dough wasn't too sweet. Her chicken legs looked great too, but too full.
I hope that new place in Csted opes before we move back to STT. Their roof is HIDEOUS - who chose red - yuck - but its supposed to be a Gordon Ramsay style, really high end chef kinda place. Dress code...coat and tie? I think they should re-think that though lol. We are STILL the islands after all 😉
