Hello all! My name is Ray, 36, Cleveland, OH. Divorced with no kids. I'm gonna do it. I got a few dollars and I want to know where is the cheapest place to live in STX? I don't care about appearances or crime, I just wanna start with bare minimums. In fact, I want to live around the poor for a while. If some of you here find a place undesireable, please tell me about it, as it is likely the place for me. I'll need a cheap house that I can fix up myself, preferably away from the beach or tourist spots. I found some on the web as low as $50K.

Also, are there any U.S. Veterans groups on the island that may be able to help with employment or relocation advice? I'm a veteran, Air Traffic Controller, U.S. Navy 88-94.

I will continue to browse the boards for all the info I need to be successful. Thank you all, in advance.

Ray

Well the poorest places on STX would be in the projects, and it takes forever to get in there because of their long waitlist.

I'm not speaking of any type of gov't housing. I have funds, I just want to live away from the tourist areas where rent is reasonable until I find a house to buy. What area are the projects located in? I was born living in projects, so near them is ok with me. Thanks for your reply.

Projects are scattered about the island in a variety of regions. There are areas of the island where houses sell fairly cheap and areas where the prices are beyond what most people can afford. The west end of the island typically has lower prices than the east end. You can run your own searches on what is available in the St. Croix MLS on my website at:

If you have questions about any properties you find there, don't hesitate to ask. Most of the properties priced under $80K have never been completed and lived in. Occasionally something shows up within that price range that is complete enough to inhabit. If you aren't opposed to completing and fixing a property while living in it, there are a few options available to you.

Thank you for your response Alexandria. The west end...ok. I had every intention of finishing the property if it meets my needs. That's what I do here, rehabilitate houses. I'll check your site out asap, thanks again.

With regards to veteran's groups, my understanding is that the USVI is very generous to veterans. Unfortunately, not being a veteran myself, I didn't take down all the details a friend related to me. I will see if I can get him to post.
