sprint vs at&t
I did some searching on the list and didn't really find a comparison of the two available cellphone providers. Does anyone have a preference or is one superior to the other in signal? STX
Thanks for the info!
Theresa
I get the impression AT&T is the fair haired child here. Has signal in most parts of STX, if that's where you're thinking of being. Don't know about STT or STJ.
I keep forgetting to include the island. I meant St. Croix
I don't know about STX, but where I live on STT only Sprint works, and I have friends on STT at whose house only AT&T works. Your best bet is to find a place to live here and then ask your new neighbors what service they use. You may end up living in a place where you are able to choose between Sprint and AT&T, and you may not.
I have Sprint here on St.Croix and I constantly get dropped calls. Mid conversation, the call will end, sometimes when the phone is still calling, the connection will drop. I live on the UVI campus, and this happens inside and outside, all around campus. Although I find Sprint to be a fine company and friendly to interact with, but my calls are constantly disconnected.
I think it really depends on where you are on the island as far as sprint goes. We have sprint and in some parts of our condo the service is fine but most of the time we walk outside to talk and have no problem. We are on the north shore mid island. I also use sprint myfi for internet and most of the time it is fine. When we go to the south shore the phone is searching for service but on the west end we are fine. I have sprint because I have had it for 10 years and have a great plan but if I had to choose one I would wait until I got here and decided where I was living before I committed so that I knew I wouldn't end up without service.
From my experience AT&T blows Sprint out of the water. Many times I've been somewhere on STX and my phone rings, prompting disbelief from friends who use Sprint and don't get any service there. Also, Caller ID doesn't work with Sprint unless it's another Sprit customer.
AT&T has the best coverage on STX. I don't know about the rest of the island but Sprint has very poor coverage on the east end.
AT&T works great for me on StX
have sprint and it use to work really great on the east end (stx) but lately i have been in mid conversation and dropped. or i have to stand in a certain area of house or yard to get a signal. not sure what is up with sprint lately.
don't know anything about at&t
We have 4 AT&T cell phones in our house (STX) because AT&T seems to cover most of the island (actually it's quite rare I can't make a call anywhere on the island come to think of it but I don't go to the extreme East End often.)
I came here with my iphone on AT&T and it's worked everywhere so far, sprint can lose signal in some of the valleys on St Croix but the only issue i've had so far is it will drop the signal for a few seconds to a minute then reconnect.
I'm happy with AT&T on STX. Like others say, there are issues in certain spots where you don't get reception, but haven't noticed it as much with the "3G" signal/service.
AT&T works well most everywhere on STX. It works on far east end almost to Crammer Park. There is one dead spot on the East End road in the vicinity of Solitude and reception is spotty or non existent at Cane Bay. Data card also works reasonably well on the East end.

I can sometimes get AT&T coverage on the beach at Cane Bay but not at the dive shop or the restaurant.
I have friends with Sprint phones that have been cloned. Haven't heard anyone with AT& T getting cloned.
Edited to say the phones have been cloned....not my friends..:D
Thanks everyone for the advice! We have Verizon now and using our phone in st. croix costs $2/minute!! Holy Crap is what we said after we got back from our visit. So we are switching to at&t before leaving town. Based on their coverage map versus sprint it is superior. Of course the plans are also more expensive. I have heard that the newer phones get better service too. I did have Sprint for 5 years and loved them but it seems like AT&T is more reliable for the island.
thanks again everyone!
Get an AT&T go phone at Radio Shack for less than $50
i am not very familiar with go phone. how are there plans? i like the idea of not being in a 2 year contract again.
there is a pay as you go. You buy a phone card at a convience store or you can get a monthly plan with no contract and manage it online or by phone with a credit card. Radio Shack is in Sunney Isle.
everybody should just get on at&t so i never have to pay for any calls 🙂
